    Choosing a Size

There are a couple of different ways you can go about choosing the correct size to make these baby girl shoes. The best way to determine what size to make is to measure the baby’s foot, and then make the shoes slightly larger than needed.

However, if you are not able to measure the baby’s feet, you can estimate the approximate size of the shoes based on the baby’s age. You might also want to take into account if the baby is average or above average for its age, then take your best guess as to which size will fit. Remember, you can always make the shoes the next size up so that they are a little big, then the baby can grow into them.

    Crochet Techniques to Know

To make these crochet baby girl shoes, there are a few basic crochet stitches you will need to know how to make, in addition to a few special stitches. First, the simple crochet stitches you will want to know include the chain stitch, single crochet stitch, double crochet stitch, and slip stitch. If you do not know how to make these or would like a refresher on how to make these stitches, be sure to check out this tutorial.

In addition to these basic crochet stitches, there are also a few special stitches you will need to know. Let’s take a look at these in detail.

    Special Stitches

    Double Crochet Increase

A double crochet increase helps you to increase your overall number of stitches in a round. To make this special stitch, you will simply make two double crochet stitches in one space, thereby increasing the overall stitch count in that row. This can be done with a single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet, but in this pattern, a double crochet is used.

    Double Crochet Decrease (dc2tog)

A double crochet decrease stitch reduces the overall number of crochet stitches in a round. There are a variety of ways you can decrease the stitches, by making an invisible decrease, or in this case, I suggest using a double crochet two together.

To make a dc2tog, you will first yarn over, then insert hook in the first stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop, there are three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook. Yarn over again, and insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. There are now four loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops. Yarn over one last time and pull through the remaining three loops on your hook to finish out the stitch.

    Tips for Crocheting Baby Booties

    Best Yarn for Baby Boots

The best yarn to use for making these baby shoes is going to be a soft yarn. There are some nice worsted-weight yarn options, including baby yarns. It’s up to your preference as to exactly what yarn you use. Just make sure it is a nice, thin yarn, that feels soft to the touch.

    Substituting Different Yarn

When you use different types of yarn, other than baby yarn, you may need to adjust the hook size you use, so that the baby shoes still turn out the right size. It is also important that no matter what yarn you use, you select to use soft, washable yarn for the baby girl shoes. If needed be sure to adjust the size hook so that your stitches match the gauge for this pattern.

Use stitch markers to keep track of your rows

Though not required, it is a good idea to use a stitch marker to keep track of where your rounds start and end. That way you know where to join the rounds, and can keep a better idea of where you are in the pattern.

Make a swatch and check your gauge

After you have decided on the yarn to use for this project, it might be wise to make a small swatch using your yarn, and the crochet hook that you have in mind. Then measure the sample stitches against your gauge to make sure it matches up so that your baby’s shoes will turn out to be the right size.
