Cross Crochet Pattern
Skill Level: Intermediate
This crochet cross bookmark pattern is best for crocheters with a bit of experience. If you are a beginner with a little experience, you might enjoy this pattern. However, I would not recommend this pattern for those of you who are just starting to crochet.
Materials
Crochet Thread – I like to use size 20 fine crochet thread, but you can also use size 10. Crochet thread is a type of very thin yarn especially intended for lacy crochet patterns like this one.
1.75 mm Crochet Hook – This is going to be found in a small steel hook. You can buy it online, or my Hobby Lobby has a great selection for a low cost.
Scissors
Fabric Starch – this is optional, but I highly recommend using it for a nice finished project.
Abbreviations
sl st – slip stitch
ch – chain
st/sts – stitch/stitches
dc – double crochet stitch
sc – single crochet stitch
p – picot stitch
Special Stitches
Picot Stitch: I like to use the picot stitch to finish out this pattern, by making this stitch around the entire outer edge. It is an easy way to give the bookmark a finished appearance.
To make this stitch you will ch 4 sts, then in the 3rd ch from your hook, make a sl st, ch 1, then continue working as instructed in the pattern.

Add the crochet thread to the bottom point on the right hand side. Ch 1, sc in the same space. (ch 4, make a sl st in the 3rd ch from the hook, ch 1, sc around the next dc st) Repeat around the entire outside of the cross. When you get to the corners, work sc2tog rather than a normal sc st to keep the corners nice and even. When you get back to your starting point, join with a sl st and finish off, by weaving in the ends.
Soaking, Starching, and Drying
After your crochet bookmark has been finished, be sure to tuck in any loose ends of yarn. Then, I highly recommend that you soak the bookmark either in cold water, or fabric starch. The fabric starch will help it hold it’s shape long term, but the water will help it lay flat if you don’t have starch as an option.
Soak the bookmark in the liquid of your choice (cold water or fabric starch) until the bookmark is completely saturated. Then lay a clean towel on a flat surface. Lay your soaked bookmark out on the towel, so that it lays completely flat, just as you want it.
Let it set there until the bookmark is completely dry. After your bookmark has been through this process, it will hold a nice shape, and is ready to be used, or gifted.
Helpful Tips and Tricks
Choosing the Crochet Thread
Choosing the right size crochet thread can be challenging. There are so many options, so which one do you choose? You may select the size crochet thread of your choice. I highly recommend going with a fine (size 20) crochet thread, that way your bookmark turns out extra delicate. However, you can use classic crochet thread (size 10) if you prefer. Keep in mind the size of crochet thread you use will determine the overall size of your bookmark.
Crochet thread is the best option for this crochet bookmark pattern because it is intended for intricate designs like this one, or for crochet doilies. You will not want to use regular yarn to make this pattern.
