Repeat rows 3 and 4 until the mittens are wide enough to reach all the way around your babies hands. For me this was 40 rows.

Closing the Side of the Mitten

After you have your mittens wide enough, fold them in half then cut the yarn tail so that it is approximately 24 inches long. This should be plenty, with a lot extra left over. Thread your yarn needle with the yarn tail and whip stitch along the side of your folden mittens to sew both sides together. Whip stitch through each stitch along the side. Do not finish off.

Insert your needle through every other stitch around the top of the mitten opening. Pull the yarn tight to sinch the mitten closed. Then stitch the top throughly to hold it in place. Finish off and weave in any yarn tails.

    Making Other Sizes

You can also make these mittens in other sizes. To do this, you will simply want to chain as many stitches as it takes to measure the lingth of the baby’s hand and wrist. Below are some examples of measurements to fit these different size baby’s hands. Otherwise you can follow the pattern as instructed above.

Finish off but leave a really long tail for sewing.

Fold the mitten in half so that it lays evenly against itself, now it’s time to sew it closed. To close the mittens thread a yarn needle or tapestry needle with the long tail of yarn, then whip stitch through both sides starting at the wrist and working your way up the thumb.

When you get to the top of the thumb, insert your needle across the top through every other stitch and pull it tight at the top of the thumb. Continue to whip stitch around the edges of the other side of the thumb working from the top down, then up the side of the main mitten.

Once the side of the mitten is closed, insert your needle through every other sititch around the open top of the main mitten. When you have gone around the whole opening, pull the yarn tight to close it up. Stitch around the top once more to make sure it is closed securely.

Finish off, then go back and repeat the same steps to close the top of the thumb. Be sure to weave in any ends of yarn before you finish. Then you are ready to use these cute baby mittens!

Baby Mittens Crochet Pattern Tips and Tricks

How to make the mittens with the best fit

Ideally it would be best to have the hand measurement of the child you are making the mittens for. If you don’t have that, you can follow the size estimates. If in doubt, remember it’s always best to go a little bigger than you think you might need.

    Using velvet yarn

I like to make some mittens using velvet yarn. Just make sure that you are using larger weight yarn, preferably not baby velvet yarn.

    Choosing the right hook size

The crochet hook size that you use will depend on a few things. The size of yarn you use as well as your stitching tension will depend on the best crochet hook size to use.
