Crochet Purse Free Pattern
Materials
3 skeins 100% cotton yarn – I used Denim Blue of Print I Love This Cotton Yarn at Hobby Lobby
Size G (4.00 mm) crochet hook
Scissors
A stitch marker is optional
Fat quarter of fabric
A large button
A needle and thread
Abbreviations
sl st – slip stitch
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
st/sts – stitch/stitches
blo – back loop only
How to Crochet a Small Purse for Beginners
Step 1: Make the Bottom
R1. Ch 31 sts
R2. In the 2nd ch from hook, make 3 sc sts, sc in each st across until you reach the last ch space. In the last ch st, make 3 sc sts. Turn, working in the blo sc in each st across. Join with a sl st to the first sc st.
R3. Ch 1, working in the st where you made 3 sc sts in the last round, make 3 sc sts in the first st, (this is the first corner made), sc in the next st, make 3 sc sts in the next st (this is the second corner made). Sc in each of the next sts across until you reach the st where you worked 3 sc sts in the last row. Make 3 sc sts, (this is the third corner made), sc in the next st, then work 3 sc sts in the next st, (this is the fourth corner made), sc in each of the sts across. Join with a sl st.
R4. Ch 1, sc in the first st, then in the next st, make 3 sc sts to create the first corner, sc in the next 3 sts, make 3 sc sts in the next corner, sc in each st across until you come to the third corner. Make 3 sc sts, sc in the next 3 sts, 3 sc in the next st to make the fourth corner, then sc in each st across. Join with a sl st.
R5. Ch 1, sc in the first 2 sts, then in the next st, make 3 sc sts to create the first corner, sc in the next 5 sts, make 3 sc sts in the next corner, sc in each st across until you come to the third corner. Make 3 sc sts, sc in the next 5 sts, 3 sc in the next st to make the fourth corner, then sc in each st across. Join with a sl st.
Step 2: Create the Purse Body
R6. Ch 1, sc in each st around, working in the blo. Do not join.
R7. Sc in the first st, *ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next st*. Repeat from * to * around.
R8. Working in the sts from the previous round, sc around the next ch 1 sp, and into the sc from the previous round, ch 1, skip the next sc st, and sc around the next ch 1 st, into the sc from the previous round. Repeat around.
Continue this pattern of making a sc st around the ch 1 sts, into the sc from the previous row, then making a ch 1 st, skip the next st, and make another sc around the next ch 1 st. Repeat this process until the purse is as tall as you’d like it to be. Mine measures 8 inches tall for this section.
Step 3: Make the Strap
You can place the strap wherever you want. I folded the purse in half to see about where the sides fell, then ended the final round of the purse body there by joining the stitches together.
Then ch 1, and working in the blo, sc in the next 7 sts.
Ch 1, turn, and make a thermal stitch by working sc sts through the blo of the row just made, AND the previous row. Make 7 sc sts working this stitching technique.
Turn, ch 1, repeat the thermal stitch by working these sc sts in the blo of the row you just finished, and the previous row, until the handle is as long as you want it to be. I made mine so that it could reach comfortably across my body.
When your strap is as long as you want it to be, simply crochet it using a slip stitch to the opposite side of your purse as where the first side of the strap is attached. Make sure your purse lays nicely with both straps attached. Do not finish off.
Step 4: Make the Flap
Sl st from the joining strap to the body of the purse, so that there are about 2 sts between the strap, and the flap that we are going to make.
Now we are going to pick up working the moss stitch pattern again, by making a sc and ch 1 st, but this time, we will only be working in the current row.
R1. Sl st from the strap until you reach the first ch 1 sp. Ch 1, and sc in that same ch 1 st, from the previous row. Ch 1, skip the next st, and sc in the next ch 1 space. Work across, until you come to the last workable ch 1 sp before the strap.
R2. Ch 1, turn, sc in the first st, and in the next ch 1 st, *ch 1, skip the next st, and sc in the next ch 1 st*. Repeat across.
Repeat this row until your purse flap is as long as you wish. When folded over, mine goes about half way down the purse.
Finish off and weave in any loose ends of yarn. If desired sew a large button in the center of the flap for added decoration.
Step 5: Sew the Lining
This step is optional but I like to do it so that nothing happens to fall through the purse, and that is to sew a fabric lining into the purse. To do this, you will need some fabric, how much depends on how large your purse ended up being. For mine, I was able to use a fat quarter.
Fold the fabric in half, so that the right sides are together. Then lay your purse on top of it, and cut around the purse with your scissors.
Sew a seam around the two sides and the bottom of your fabric to sew it together. Then take the top and turn the edges under twice. Iron or pin this in place, then sew a seam around the edge to hold the fabric in place.
Take your lining, and hand sew it to the inside of your purse. Make sure that it is secured really well before tying off your thread.
When you are finished, your purse is done and ready to be enjoyed!

What type of yarn is best?
When you are making a crocheted purse, it’s very important to use all 100% cotton yarn so that the yarn does not easily stretch. Cotton yarn holds its shape well, and can be washable if you absolutely need to. I would not recommend that you use any kind of acrylic blend for this project.
