Tips and Tricks for making Crochet Hot Pads
Adding Hanging Loop to Potholder
There are two main ways you can add a hanging loop to your hot pad. That is with yarn or with a wooden circle hanger.
With Yarn:
There are a few different ways you can make a hanging loop for your hot pad with yarn. The easiest way is to make a chain loop. However, you can also make single crochet stitches in the chain if you prefer it to be more beefy.
With Wood:
Another fun way to make a hanging loop is to use a wooden circle for the hanger. To attach the wood, you can simply make a chain and wrap it around the wooden circle a few times to hold it on, before joining the chain back to the potholder with a slip stitch.
Seaming Into a Square
When your crochet hot pad is large enough that it meets in the middle, you can finish off the pot holder, but leave a long yarn tail for sewing. Then thread the yarn with a yarn needle and whip stitch the two sides together to close the hot pad.
Why you should use cotton yarn for your hot pads
When making a crochet hot pad, you should always use 100% cotton yarn. This is because the cotton yarn can withstand high temperatures that it will be exposed to as a hot pad. Acrylic yarn on the other hand will melt with it comes in contact with the high heat. This is why it is very important that only 100% cotton yarn is used.
You can find 100% cotton yarn at your local craft store, or even in the craft section of large grocery stores such as Walmart.
Crochet Potholder FAQs
What Yarn is Best for Crochet Potholders?
There are many different options when choosing yarn to make your crochet potholders. First, make sure that the yarn is 100% cotton yarn. This is very important for the hot pads to last. Then you can select the specific yarn.
Best Cotton Yarn for Potholders
There are many great options for 100% cotton yarn. Some good brands include lily sugar n’ cream yarn, or peaches and cream yarn. I find these at JoAnns or Walmart, but you can also order them online. Hobby Lobby also has a great selection of 100% cotton yarn, in their own brand.
