How to make our Thermal Stitch Pot Holder Crochet Pattern
Row 1. Chain 36 stsÂ
Row 2. In the 2nd ch st from the hook, make a sc, sc in each remaining stitch across to the last chain. (35)Â

Row 3. ch 1, turn, working in the blo of the sc stitches from the first sc row you made, insert your hook through the blo of the first st, then go down and insert your hook through the blo of the foundation chain you made. There are three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull up a loop through both stitches, yarn over and pull through the remaining two stitches on your hook. Repeat these steps to make the thermal stitch in each stitch across to the end of the row.
Repeat row three working in the back loop of the stitch on the current row and the previous row until you have created a square.

Finishing Out the Pot Holder
Row 4. ch 1, turn, working through both loops, AND the back loop of the previous row, make a sc in each st across the row.Â
Then make a hanging loop if desired before finishing off.

How to make a Hanging Loop
There are a few different ways that you can make a hanging loop for your pot holder. The easiest way is to start in the corner of the potholder, where you finished stitching and create a chain, approximately 10-15 stitches (or as long as you want), then make a slip stitch back in that corner stitch before finishing off the yarn and weaving in the ends.

Crochet Pot Holder Tips and Tricks
What type of yarn should be used
When you are making hot pads or pot holders, or really anything that is going to be exposed to high temperatures or hot pans, it is very important that you do NOT use acrylic yarn.
The best type of yarn to use is 100% cotton yarn. Hobby Lobby has some nice options for cotton yarn, or you can also purchase it online or sometimes in the craft section at your grocery store.

Choosing the right crochet hook size
Although I have given a recommendation on the crochet hook size to use, you may need to adjust it depending on your stitching tension and the yarn weight that you use.
Making the thermal stitch
The thermal stitch is one of the best stitches for crochet potholders. As the name suggests, it is a good stitch that creates a durable crochet fabric that does really well for projects such as hot pads and pot holders.
Can you make these in 9×13 as well?
Absolutely! All you need to do is make as many chain stitches as if takes you to reach nine inches. Then follow the pattern above until you reach approximately thirteen inches long. Easy! This is one of the great things about using the thermal stitch to crochet your pot holders and hot pads, you don’t have to use any kind of fancy steps to make any size that you want. Just simply increase the beginning chain and how many rows you make before finishing off the pot holder.
