Row 3: ch 1, turn, sl st in the next 5 sts, sc through both loops of the next 35 sts, working in the blo, sc through the remaining 15 sts.
Row 4: ch 1, turn, working in the blo, sc through the remaining 15 sts, in the next 35 sts sc through both loops, sl st through the blo of the last 5 sts.
Repeat row 3 and 4 until the hat measures your desired head circumfrence. End your stitching at the base of the hat, working through the 15 sc stitches in the back loop only.
Tip: I used a stitch marker on the last stitch of the 15 sc stitches that are made through the back loop only, where it transitions to working through both loops. That way is much easier to keep track of as you work!

Note: there is not a right side or a wrong side with this pattern which is kind of nice!
Finishing It Out
Close the Side
Finish off the hat by cutting a long tail of yarn, approximately two feet long. Then thread a yarn needle. Working from the bottom of the hat up to the top, whip stitch through the back loop and front loops of the first 15 stitches.
Then when you reach the next 35 sc stitches, whip stitch through all of the loops. Repeat this until you get to the top of the hat.

Close the Top
To clost the top of the hat, insert your needle through every other stitch as show in the picture below. Then pull your yarn around the top tight, and stitch across the top of the hat in several places to hold it shut securely. Make sure that the inside and outside is stitched closed nicely.
When you have the top securely closed, tie a knot with your yarn and weave in the ends to finish out. make sure to tuck in any loose ends of yarn.
Now your crochet men’s winter hat is finished and ready to wear or give away!

How to make Different Sizes
You can easily adjust this pattern to make a variety of sizes. The hat size will be determined by the men’s head circumference measurement. In order to get the perfect fit, it is best to measure the man’s head that you are making the hat for, so you know his exact head circumference.
If you do not have the man’s head measurement, you can estimate the size based on an average men’s head, but remember, men often have larger heads than women, and you might even need it to be extra big around, depending on the specific man.
Average Male Head Circumference: 21.5-23.5 inches
