    Skills Required:

In order to successfully make this crochet bunny rabbit, there are a few basic crochet stitches you will need to know. Here are the main stitches you will want to know.

Chain Stitch. The chain stitch is a basic foundational crochet stitch that is used for many different things. Learn how to make it here.

Magic Ring (aka Magic Circle). The magic ring also known as a magic circle is a foundational stitch for many round projects. Learn how to make this stitch here. Here’s a tip for you though, if you are using bulky yarn or velvet yarn, you will likely want to chain 2 stitches instead, and work the stitches as instructed in the 2nd chain stitch from your hook.

Slip Stitch. A slip stitch is often used to join a round, or get you from one place to another. There are also many other uses for this stitch. Learn how to make it here

Single Crochet. A single crochet stitch is one of the basic crochet stitches, it is a short stitch, but nice and tight which is why we want to use it in this crochet project. That way there are no holes in your bunny rabbit. Learn how to make the single crochet stitch here.

Single Crochet Increase. A single crochet increase stitch is where you are increasing the number of stitches in your project. To do this, you will simply make two single crochet stitches in the same stitch, thereby increasing the overall stitch count. This is what helps to shape your bunny rabbit.

Invisible Decrease. The other way to shape your bunny rabbit is by making an invisible decrease stitch. Other similar stitches are the single crochet two together, or the single crochet decrease. The great thing about the single crochet invisible decrease is that your decrease stitch won’t be bumpy, making it invisible in appearance. See how to make this stitch with this quick video.

    You Will Need

    Yarn:

There are many different types of yarn to choose from, so what is the right choice? I used a baby velvet yarn from Hobby Lobby called “Baby Bee Adore-A-Ball” Yarn. It took close to two skeins of this yarn. You can choose from a baby blue yarn, pink yarn, or white yarn. I like this yarn because it makes a soft bunny.

However, if you prefer to work with yarn that is easier to see your stitches you can use a #4 medium weight worsted weight yarn. If you are not able to find at least a medium weight yarn, you will want to use two strands of yarn at the same time for lighter weight yarn, so that your bunny turns out a decent size. Otherwise the bunny rabbit will be quite small.

    Additional Crochet Supplies:

    • Safety eyes (optional)
    • A stitch marker to help keep track of your rounds

    bunny head and ears

    Ears (make 2)

There are many different ways to make bunny rabbits ears. This pattern I used straight ears, but you can replace them with floppy ears if you prefer.

Round 1: make a mr, in the mr make 6 sc sts, join with a sl st. (6)

    Round 2: ch 1, inc x 6, join with a sl st. (12)

Round 7-11: ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a sl st. (18)

Pinch the opening of the bunny ears in half to fold them, then stitch them in place with a yarn needle and a long tail of yarn. Leave a long tail of yarn for sewing the ears in place.

    Bunny Tail

Round 1: ch 2, in the 2nd chain from the hook, make 6 sc, join the sc with a sl st to form a circle (6st)

Round 2: ch 1, (inc, sc) in each stitch around (9st)

Round 3: ch 1, (dec, sc) in each st around (6st)

Finish off leaving a long tail of yarn for sewing. Thread the yarn tail through a yarn needle and sew the tail securely to the back of the bunny rabbit’s butt. You can also include a little bit of stuffing if desired. Then tie a knot and weave in any loose ends of yarn.

How to form the face and eyes for amigurumi bunny:

To make the bunny face extra cute, I like to thread a yarn needle or tapestry needle with the same color yarn as the bunny rabbit is made from, and make eye indentations. Then insert my needle near where I want the eyes. Push the needle over to the other eye location and pull it out. Skip to the next stitch and insert my needle back in, headed toward the opposite eye. Come out one stitch over from where my yarn went in.

Tie the yarn in a knot with both loose ends, so that the eye location becomes indented, and the nose sticks up more. Tuck the yarn ends inside of the face, and be sure to turn the yarn so that the knot isn’t visible.

    Completing Your Crochet Bunny

To complete your bunny rabbit, add any facial features you desire, to the bunny’s head. Then sew the body pieces together, weaving in any loose yarn ends so that they are secured, and well hidden.

    Embellishing with Details

Adding details is a great way to help your crochet bunny rabbit come to life. Some fun ideas you might enjoy adding are bows, flowers, or a scarf. You can make each one of these by crocheting them, then sewing them onto your bunny.

    Tips for Crocheting Bunny Patterns

Different Yarns for Different Crochet Stuffed Animals

Remember when you are selecting the type of yarn you want to use for this crochet stuffed animal, the yarn you select will determine what your bunny rabbit turns out like. I used a soft baby yarn from Hobby Lobby. You can select your favorite yarn, but keep in mind that it will change the overall results of your bunny rabbit.

    Choosing the Best Yarn

Different yarn weights will definitely impact how your bunny rabbit turns out. For example, if you use a worsted-weight yarn, your bunny will likely be a little smaller, but the yarn is much easier to work with, since you can easily see your stitches.

A good tip if you are using a yarn other than velvet yarn is to look for a yarn that is soft to the touch, and try to select a #4 medium weight yarn. This way it will still turn out close to the same size. Otherwise, if you are using a finer yarn, you may want to consider using two skeins of yarn at the same time, so that your rabbit isn’t really small.

Working with Hard to See Yarn

I like to use soft velvety yarn to make a lot of crochet animals. This is because the results are so nice, and the animal is so soft and huggable. However, it can be difficult to work with this yarn because the stitches are much harder to see.

Essentially with some of the bulkier yarn  you may have to feel out your stitches until you get the hang of it. Remember, if it is too frustrating or too difficult, feel free to switch to an easier yarn.

The Right Hook for crochet plushies

When you are making a crochet amigurumi animal you will want to be sure to select the right size hook. I have given you my recommended size, which worked well for me, but remember, your stitching tension might be different. Ideally, you want to use a hook that is small enough that you have no holes in your project, but you can still easily work in the stitch spaces.

Use stitch markers to keep track of your rounds

If you are new to round projects, or simply want some extra help, it is a great idea to use a stitch marker for your project. Simply add the stitch marker at the beginning of each round, that way you can easily tell where one round starts and ends.

Stuff your bunny as you go

Adding stuffing to your bunny rabbit as you go is another great idea. This will help you be ready for the next step when you reach it.

Use a slightly smaller hook than usual

As I already mentioned, it is a good idea to try different sizes of hooks until you find one that allows you to make your crochet stitches, without any holes in the stitches. This might mean that you need to use one that is smaller than normal.

Consider embroidered eyes instead of safety eyes

If you are making the crochet bunny for small children or even babies, it is a very wise idea to skip the safety eyes, and embroider the face onto the bunny. This way you don’t have to worry about a choking hazard for small children.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best type of yarn for creating soft and cuddly bunnies?

My favorite type of yarn for making soft cuddly bunnies is velvet yarn. Hobby Lobby has some great options, but you can also find some nice options in Bernat’s velvet yarn line.

Can this project be made in continuous rounds?

Yes, you can make this crochet bunny rabbit by working in continuous rounds if you prefer, rather than joining each round with a slip stitch. If you do this, be sure to use a stitch marker to keep track of where you are in the project. Otherwise you can follow the pattern, but simply skip the instructions where it says to join with a slip stitch.
