Free Lovey Crochet Pattern
I am so excited to share this free pattern with you to make crochet baby loveys. This free crochet pattern is the perfect project to make as the perfect gift for your upcoming baby shower. Plus, you only need to know a few basic crochet stitches to make the adorable crochet lovey.
What is a Crocheted Lovey?
A crochet lovey is a cross between a baby security blanket and a crochet animal. What you’ll do is make a small crochet blanket, then attach the head of a crochet animal to the center of the little blanket. Then sew it securely to finish off the project. This way the child gets a cute animal and blanket to hug at the same time.
This is a great pattern to make for a baby lovey because it is easy to make, and you can interchange your preferred animal head to make the lovey in any style you prefer.
What Size Should a Lovey Be?
The idea of a lovey is that they are small enough for a young child to easily hold and hug, so you don’t want to make them too large. A good size for the square blanket is to make it approximately 12×12 inches so that it is nice and huggable when you are finished.
Now that you know the basics of what a crochet lovey is, and about what size the finished project will be, let’s turn our attention to the detailed instructions to make these cute lovies. Below you can find the step-by-step instructions to make this adorable pattern.

Assembly
To assemble the baby blanket to the crochet arms and head, you will need to sew all of the pieces together. Start by sewing the arms securely to the bottom of the head. Then sew the head and arms to the center of the crochet baby blanket. Make sure to sew them very well, so that they do not come apart.
Border:
If you want, it’s a fun idea to change colors on the last time around your crochet baby blanket. This way it gives your boarder a nice, finished edge to it.
Finishing Touches
After your crochet lovey has been assembled, you may want to add a few finishing touches to the crochet project. I like to use colored yarn, or embroidery thread and add facial features to the lovey. This will help to bring it to life and add your flair to the project.
Some other fun things to add are a crochet flower, a crochet bow if you want, or even a flowered headband. I have found that it’s the finishing details that you add to your project that really help to bring it to life and make it extra cute!
Tips and Tricks
Should I use safety eyes?
No! Because these crochet lovey patterns are intended to be made and given to babies, you do not want to ever add safety eyes, noses, or buttons to the project. These are choking hazards, and should never be left with a baby or toddler.
Why are there so many types of blanket options?
There are a few easy ways you might enjoy making these crochet loveys, so I wanted to make sure you had several of the fun options. Feel free to select which style of baby blanket you prefer.
Do I need to use your blanket pattern, or can I use a different afghan pattern?
you can use andy crochet blanket pattern you want to make the small blanket for your crochet lovey. These baby blanket patterns included, are just a few easy options.
What yarn should I use when making a crochet baby lovey?
The best type of yarn to use is a medium worsted weight yarn. I like to make sure the type of yarn I use feels nice and soft since these are intended for babies, but that is my preference. You can also use velvet yarn if you prefer, but it is a little more difficult to work with and may not hold its shape for the baby blanket as well as other types.
What kind of eyes should I use for baby items?
The best type of eyes to use in this kind of project, that is intended for babies, or toddlers are embroidered or sewn-on eyes. You will never want to use buttons of plastic safety eyes, as they can be a major hazard to little ones.
What colors of yarn should I use?
It depends on what style of lovey you are aimining to make. It’s always fun to work with bright colors, but for a baby you might rather use soft or pastel colors. It’s always a fun time to use some pink yarn for a baby girl’s project, blue yarn for a boy’s, or any other colors in between for the new arrival.
Can I make this project with scrap yarn?
Yes! If you have colors that you want to combined together that fit your color scheme, this is a great project to create using your leftover yarn stash.

Making the Bunny Ears (make 2)
Assembly
To assemble the baby blanket to the crochet arms and head, you will need to sew all of the pieces together. Start by sewing the arms securely to the bottom of the head. Then sew the head and arms to the center of the crochet baby blanket. Make sure to sew them very well, so that they do not come apart.
