Another name that you might hear a snuggler referred to is a crochet lovey. Typically a lovey references an animal with a blanket, but occasionally the term will be used to reference a crochet animal without stuffing, which is what this pattern makes.

Assembling the Giraffe

Assemble the Head

On the giraffe head, sew on the ears and the horns using the long tails of yarn left on each piece. Be sure to weave in any loose yarn ends, and also be sure to sew them securely to the head.

Add the Arms

Using the yarn tails of the arms, you can eather sew them to the top of the giraffe’s body, or you can use a hook and attach them with a slip stitch. Make sure they are securely attached, then weave in any loose yarn ends.

Attaching the Snuggler Crochet Head to the Body

Using the yarn tail, sew the giraffe’s head securely to the body. It is a good idea to go across the body opening more than once, so that you are sure the head is very well attached.

Add the Tail and Spots

Finally, choose where you want the spots and tail to be located. Then use a yarn needle to sew them securely in place. When you are sewing these pieces on, be careful that you don’t go all the way through the giraffe.

Finishing It Out

Finish out your crochet giraffe snuggler by adding any special facial features you desire. I used black yarn to sew the eyes in place, so that the snuggler is safe for babies. You might enjoy stitching on a face, or other items to make your snuggler come to life.

Tips and Tricks

Working in Continuous Rounds

Some prefer to work on amigurumi projects in continuous rounds, meaning that each round would not be joined with a slip stitch. While this can be done with this crochet pattern, I would recommend following the instructions above, to help give you a better giraffe shape. Finishing your rounds also will help you to better maintain where you are in the pattern.

What type of yarn should I use?

In this pattern, I used bernat blanket yarn. This is a bulky weight yarn that comes in a variety of colors. If you prefer, you may use acrylic yarn. Just note that the finished size of your snuggler will turn out smaller than when a bulky weight yarn is used. But, using different yarn weights is a quick and easy way to make this crochet giraffe in different sizes.

Make it safe for Babies and Toddlers

Because these crochet snugglers are intended to be made for toddlers and babies, it is extremely important that it is safe for young children. In order to make them safe, you will want to skip adding any safety eyes, or buttons to the giraffe. Instead, you may embroider your desired design on the animal to give it a face and make it super cute.

Crochet Hook Size

Please note that the crochet hook size you use will depend on what yarn you use, and your stitching tightness. I recommend using a size I crochet hook with bernat blanket yarn. This way you will have tight stitches, but not too tight. Feel free to adjust as needed.
