When it comes to the type of yarn to choose from, there are so many options. Deciding what weight to use, and if you should go with bright colors or pastels is another option completely.
Best Yarn for Making Flowers
The color of yarn you choose depends on your personal taste preferences and what you intend to do with these crocheted flowers.
The weight of the yarn is also up to your personal preferences. Keep in mind that a thicker yarn is going to make larger flowers, whereas a thin yarn or baby-weight yarn will make smaller flowers.
Some good options always include DK weight yarn or worsted weight yarn. You could also try making these crocheted flowers out of sport weight yarn if desired.
Because crocheted flowers are such a small project, you don’t have to have an entire skin to make a flower, you can use the scrap yard for this project as well.
Crochet Hook

Stitches and Techniques
Popcorn aka Puff Stitch
To make a popcorn stitch or puff stitch, start by making five double crochet stitches in the space indicated.
After all five are made, remove your hook from the loop, and insert it at the top of the first double crochet, then insert the hook at the same time, back in the loop you dropped.
YO and pull through both stitches to pull it together and create a popcorn stitch.
Treble Crochet Cluster
To make a treble crochet cluster, start by *YOx2 then insert hook into the space indicated, YO and pull up a loop.
YO and pull through two loops, then YO and pull through two more loops*.
Repeat from * to * 4 times MORE, until you have a total of 5 treble crochet stitches started.
To finish, YO and pull through all 6 of the loops on your hook.

Free Crochet Flower Patterns: Step-By-Step Instructions
Crochet Rose: Simple Crochet Flower
This first pattern is quite easy to make. It is worked in rows, and you will need to use a yarn needle and long tail to sew it so that it holds its shape.
Row 1: Chain 53
Row 2: in the 3rd ch space from the hook, make hdc, 3 dc, hdc, *skip next ch space, sc, skip next ch space, in the next space make hdc, 3 dc, hdc*.
Repeat from * to * for the rest of the row.
Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing. Roll the row upon itself, then turn the flower over, and sew the back of the flower with a yarn needle.
Small Crochet Flower Patterns
Making a small flower is quite simple. You may choose to use a different color center, or make the center of the flower, and the petals all the same color. These cute little flowers are adorable and are great for a lot of different projects.
Round 1: ch 2, in the first stitch, make 10 hdc in the first ch space, join with sl st to the first st.

Round 2: ch 1, sc in the first st, *ch 1, in the next st make 5 dc, ch 1, sc in next stitch*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch.
Petal Crochet Flower
Petal crochet flowers are very simple flowers, where you focus on the petals and leave the center open. These are great crochet flowers for beginners.
Round 1: ch 3, make 3 dc, then ch 2, sl st in the first ch, then *ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, sl st*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the first ch.
The number of petals you make in this petal flower is entirely up to you. I like to make five petals, but you can make as many or few as you wish.
Sweet Little Crochet Flowers
These sweet little crochet flowers are such a fun addition to any project, or all by themselves. To make these, the basic stitches used are a chain, single crochet, and a double crochet cluster, but don’t worry, below are the specific details for making this six double crochet cluster to form each petal.
Round 1: ch 2, 10 sc in the first st, join with sl st.
Round 2: ch 1, sc in the first st, ch 2, in the next stitch make a 6 dc cluster.
To do this, YO and insert your hook into the stitch, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through the first two loops on your hook.
Repeat these steps five times more, YO and pull through the seven loops on the hook, the first 6 dc cluster is now made. *Ch 2, sc in next st, ch 2, make 6 dc cluster in the next st*. Repeat from * to * around.
Join with slip stitch. Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Detailed Crochet Flower
These flowers are one of my personal favorites! They are beautiful to add to other projects such as hats, head bands, or to use on hair accessories.
Round 1: ch 2, in the first chain stitch, make 8 sc stitches. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
Round 2: ch 1, make PC stitch (see detailed instructions above) in the first single crochet space, chain 2, make another PC in the next sc sp. Repeat around, until you get to the beginning. Ch 1, sc to the first sc sp to finish the round.
Round 3: The next round will work in the ch 2 spaces from the previous round. Ch 2, sc in the same space, also in the same space make 1 dc, 3 tr, 1 dc, ch 2, sc, *in the next space sc, ch 2, 1 dc, 3 tr, 1 dc, ch 2, sc*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st. Finish off, leaving about an inch of yarn for sewing.
Lace Flower Motif Pattern
This last pattern is a larger flower and a beautiful one! It is also another one of my favorites. Let’s jump right into the instructions you can follow to make this pattern.
Round 1: ch 3, make 7 hdc in the first ch space. Join with sl st to the first st to form a ring.
Round 2: ch 2, work popcorn stitch,* ch 2, PC in next st*. Repeat from * to * around. After you finish the last popcorn stitch, ch 1, then sc to the first st to join.
Round 3: ch 2, in the first ch 2 space, work 3 dc, ch 2, sc,* sc in the next ch 2 space, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, sc*. Repeat from * to * around. Sc in first st, then sl st to the first ch space.
Round 4: ch 1, sc around the back of the center dc in the first flower petal. Chain 5 stitches, sc around the back of the next petal in the center dc. Repeat around, 6 ch 5 spaces. Ch 1, join with dc to the first sc space.
Round 5: ch 2, in the ch 5 space make, *sc, hdc, dc, 2 tr, dc, hdc, sc,* repeat from * to * in the next ch 5 space around. Join with sl st to the first sc space.
Round 6: ch 4, sl st around the first tr in the previous round petal, ch 4, sl st around the next sc, repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch space. (14 ch 4 spaces)
Round 7: ch 1, in the first ch 4 space make sc, 3 dc, ch 3, then in the first ch space make a slip stitch, 3 dc in the same chain 4 space, sc. Repeat from * to * working in each ch 4 space. Join with slip stitch to the first stitch, and finish off.
