This adorable, crocheted whale is a fun and simple project to make. You don’t have to spend a ton of time and energy in order to have your whale turn out adorable! You only need two colors of yarn and some basic crochet knowledge.
Adorable Crochet Whale
Making a blue whale is a lot of fun with this crochet pattern. Sea creatures are a great addition, whether you’re looking for a gift for a family member, or something to add to your baby room. This blue whale project can be created in a little time and only needs a little sewing to finish out the project.
The written pattern below will walk you through the step-by-step process of making a baby whale amigurumi pattern. The detailed instructions show you how to make each of the separate pieces, as well as how to assemble them together to make this cute whale pattern!

Simple Crochet Stitches
This pattern uses some very basic crochet stitches to make the whale. The main stitch used in this pattern is a single crochet stitch. In addition to the basic single crochet stitch, you will also need to know how to do a single crochet increase, as well as a single crochet decrease stitch. This is how the size and shape are formed.
You don’t have to be an experienced crocheter to make this whale pattern. Although experienced crocheters will have an easier time, beginner crocheters can also make this pattern, by following the detailed instructions.
Let’s take an overview, of what a single crochet stitches, an increase, as well as a decrease stitch. That way, even if you are a beginner crochet, you can still make this pattern!
Single Crochet Stitches
To make a single crochet stitch, you were simply inserted into the next stitch indicated, yarn over, and pull up a loop. You have two loops on the hook, then yarn over and pour the new loop through the two previous loops on the hook to make a single crochet stitch.
Single Crochet Increase
A single crochet increase stitch is simply when you make two single crochet stitches in one stitch. That way you are increasing the number of stitches in that row.
Single Crochet Decrease Stitch
A decrease stitch is when you combine two single crochet stitches into one. To do this you will insert the hook into the stitch indicated, yarn over, and pull up a loop. There are now two loops on the hook.
Insert the hook into the next stage indicated, yarn over, and pull up another loop. There are now three loops on the hook. Yarn over one last time and pull through all three loops on the hook. This makes a decreased stitch.
Invisible Decrease Stitch
To make an invisible decrease stitch, you will insert the hook into the next stitch, then insert the hook into the following stitch. Yarn over and pull the loop through both stitches on the hook. Yarn over and pull through the remaining two stitches.
The invisible decreased stitch does the same thing as a single crochet decrease but is ideally less noticeable as being a decreased stitch than the basic single crochet decrease.
Tips and Tricks for the Whale Pattern
Using A Magic Ring (or Magic Circle). One option for starting your crochet whale pattern is to use a magic ring or magic circle. While this is a great option it can be confusing to some crocheters. Another great option is to use a slip stitch and allow plenty of yarn tail to adjust the slip stitch to your desired size. Then after all the stitches are made, you can simply pull the slip knot tight.
Working in a Continuous Spiral. This pattern is not written so that you work in a continuous spiral around the body of the whale. It can be done if you prefer to use this method, however, I prefer to know exactly where I am, and you can use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round if desired.
Kind of Yarn to Use
The kind of yarn you choose to use will determine the finished size of your crocheted well. When making this pattern, I used a velvet yarn, because I liked the soft finish of the whale. You can use regular worsted weight yarn, or velvet yarn if desired. However, if the yarn is very thin or fine, you might want to double the yarn so that it is thick enough.
When making the whale, you can choose whichever color you prefer. A deep blue is always a great option, as well as any other color of blue. Using turquoise or teal is another good option. Feel free to mix it up and make it fun if you want to use another color! I do recommend making the body of the whale one color, and then making the belly another color, I did a mixture of blue for the body, and white for the belly.
Crochet Hook Size
The crochet hook size you choose to use will depend entirely on what yarn you choose to use. The package of your yarn will have a recommended hook size on it. This is a good rule of thumb to follow, and you can adjust the crochet hook depending on the recommended size.
Keep in mind some people tend to crochet tighter, but others crochet loosely naturally. You will want to adjust your hook accordingly. When using velvet yarn to make this crocheted whale pattern, I used a size H crochet hook or a 5.0 mm crochet hook.
Amigurumi Whale Crochet Pattern

This cute little crochet whale is made in separate pieces, and then sewn together, before making the belly and stuffing it. Once assembled, you will have a cute whale to enjoy! Free Crochet Whale Pattern
Side Fins (Make 2)
Round 1: ch 2, in the 2nd ch from the hook, insert hook and make 6 sc sts. Join with a sl st.
Round 2: ch 1, make an inc st in each st around. Join with sl st.
Round 3: ch 1, work (inc, sc in next 2 sts) repeat around. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.
Round 4-6: ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with sl st.
Round 7: ch 1, work (inv dec, sc) around. Join with sl st.
Round 8: ch 1, work sc in each st around. Join with sl st. leave a long tail for sewing and finish off.
Tail Fins
The tail fins are made at the base and worked out towards the end of the tail.
Round 1: ch 12, join with a sl st to form a large circle.
Round 2-4: ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a sl st.
Round 5: ch 1, sc in the next 6 sts, ch 2, sl st to the first ch space. This has divided the tail into two sections. Continue working on the current section, we will come back to the remaining side of the tail fin.
Round 6: ch 1, (inc, sc) in each stitch around. Join with sl st.
Round 7: ch 1, sc in next st, and in each st around.
Round 8: ch 1, work inv dec around. Join with sl st.
Round 9: ch 1, insert the hook into the first st, YO, and pull up a loop, repeat this step with each st, until you have a loop on the hook for each st. YO and pull through all of the loops on the hook. Finish off and weave in the yarn tail.
Second Tail Fin
To make the second tail fin, you will want to insert the hook on the remaining side of the tail and repeat rounds 6-9 outlined above.
Making the Whale Body
To make the whale’s body, we will start at the top of the whale (or the top of head).
Round 1: ch 2, in the 2nd ch from the hook make 6 sc sts. Join with sl st to the first ch sp.
Round 2: ch 1, work an inc st in each st around. Join with sl st.
Round 3: ch 1, work (inc, sc) around. Join with sl st.
Round 4: ch 1, work (inc, 2 sc) around. Join with sl st.
Round 5: ch 1, work (inc, 3 sc) around. Join with sl st.
Round 6: ch 1, work (inc, 4 sc) around. Join with sl st.
Round 7: ch 1, work (inc, 5 sc) around. Join with sl st.
Round 8: ch 1, work (inc, 6 sc) around. Join with sl st.
Round 9: ch 1, work (inc, 7 sc) around. Join with sl st.
Round 10: ch 1, work (inc, 8 sc) around. Join with sl st.
Round 11-18: ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st.
At this point you will want to insert safety eyes at your desired location, as well as sew on the side fins, and tail fins. Before sewing on the fins, you may choose to add stuffing to them if desired.
Attach the first fin by placing it on the side as desired, then use the tail of yarn and yarn needle to sew it securely in place. Repeat this process with the other side fin, and tail fin.
Color Change
Now it’s time to change the color of the yarn you are working with before you crochet the belly of the whale. I like to make the body of the whale blue, and the belly white, but the color combination is entirely up to you.
After you have changed the colors, make sure to tuck the yarn tail in, then continue making the belly.
Round 19: working in the BLO sc in each st around. Join with sl st.
Round 20: ch 1, work (dec, 8 sc) around. Join with sl st.
Round 21: ch 1, work (dec, 7 sc) around. Join with sl st.
