Simple Stitches

If you are brand new to crocheting, then you might need to learn a new crochet stitch. Otherwise, you only need two or three basic stitches to make this beautiful, crocheted washcloth.

Different Stitches In this Pattern

Chain Stitch. A chain stitch is a basic stitch needed to create the foundation of this crochet project. To make a chain, start by creating a slip knot, then place the loop from the slip knot over your crochet hook. Hold the loop, with your finger, then wrap the yarn, from the back, around towards the front. This is called a yarn over or “YO”. Pull the new yarn through the loop that was previously on your hook to make a chain stitch.

Double Crochet Stitches. To make a double crochet stitch, you will first want to yarn over, then insert your hook into the stitch indicated. Yarn over again and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook. Then yarn over once more and pull through the remaining two loops on your hook. This makes a double crochet stitch.

Single Crochet Stitches. Single crochet stitches are optional in this pattern, but it is sometimes fun to create a stitch pattern by working every other row in alternating stitches.

To make a single crochet stitch, you will want to insert your hook into the stitch indicated, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Yarn over once more and pull through the two loops on your hook. This makes a single crochet stitch.

How do you make a double crochet pattern?

Making a double crochet stitch is one of the basic crochet stitches. If you are just learning how to crochet, be sure to check out my easy tutorial on how to make a double crochet stitch. You can also watch this quick video demonstrating how to double crochet.

Once you know how to make a double crochet stitch, you can easily make a pattern out of this stitch. Sometimes I like to alternate rows, making a double crochet row, followed by a single crochet row. This is nice because it adds texture to your dishcloth. However, it is not required for a nice dishcloth.

How do you use crochet dishcloths?

Crochet dishcloths are a great item to have around your house. These crochet dishcloths can be used to clean dishes, wipe off counter tops, or tables. Basically, they are just really handy to have in your home.

Another great use for these crochet dishcloths is to give them away as gifts or sell them at a craft show, or craft market. There are so many great ways to use crochet dishcloths, you can’t go wrong with this easy crochet project.

Tips for This Pattern

Making a Stitch Pattern

Making a stitch pattern by alternating what stitches you make in each row is entirely up to you. One fun way to mix things up a little bit is to make one row out of double crochet stitches, and the next row entirely out of single crochet stitches. The other option is to make every row out of all double crochet stitches.

In the pattern details below, I will walk you through both of these options, in case you feel like mixing things up a little bit.

Working in the Back Loop Only

There are a few different ways you can mix things up with your basic stitches. One of these is to work in the back loop only of your stitches. This is an easy way to give your dishcloth a great texture. However, if you don’t like this look, you can make a flat dishcloth by working your stitches through both loops.

The Best Yarn to Use for Dishcloths

There are many different types of yarn out there, so what is the best yarn to use when making dishcloths? First, it’s important to use 100% cotton yarn for the best cotton dishcloths. This type of yarn will hold up the best and won’t melt when exposed to heat.

When you are in the craft store’s yarn aisle, you will notice that they have a special section of yarn dedicated to making things like washcloths, potholders, and kitchen towels. While you are picking out your yarns, the yarn weight will typically be worsted weight yarn. But you can also read the packaging of the yarn to make sure it is intended for dishcloths.

Your favorite yarns also come in many different color options. Feel free to choose a solid color, or variegated, or even change the colors as you go, depending on your preferences. To make one dishcloth, you will only need a small amount of yarn. Typically, one small skein of yarn will make an entire dishcloth, depending on the finished size you desire.

Not let’s turn our attention to the free pattern below which will walk you through the step-by-step process of making this easy pattern for a double crochet dishcloth.

Optional Edging

You can make a single crochet border around either of these patterns if desired. The best way to do this is when you get to the end of your final row, chain 1 stitch. In that same stitch, make 2 single crochet stitches.

Then, make a single crochet stitch in each stitch around the edge of the dishcloth. When you come to the corner make 3 single crochet stitches in the same space.

When you get back to the first stitch, make a final single crochet stitch in the same space as the first two, then finish off and weave in the ends.

Tip: As you are making the border, make sure that your stitches lay flat. If they begin to ripple, then you have too many stitches in the spaces.
