When the hat is large enough around, you can turn the hat wrong side out, and slip stitch through both sides to form the hat into a circle. Finish off, and weave in any yarn tails. Turn the hat right side out, and you are ready to enjoy the hat!

Basic Crochet Stitches Used in the Messy Bun Hat

There are a few basic stitches you will need to know in order to make this crochet messy bun hat. These simple stitches include the following. Please note, you can find detailed instructions on how to make each of these stitches at Learning How To Crochet

Slip stitch. A slip stitch helps to join stitches in the round together or get you from one location to the next.

Chain stitch. A chain stitch is a type of crochet stitch that looks like a chain. It is made by wrapping the yarn over your hook from back to front, then pulling it through the previous loop on your hook. This stitch is foundational for most crochet projects, and used as a stitch throughout projects.

Single crochet. A single crochet stitch is the first and shortest basic crochet stitch. Watch how to make this stitch here

Half double crochet. The half double crochet stitch is a size in between a single and a double. This is also a basic crochet stitch. Watch how to make the half double crochet stitch here.

Double crochet. A double crochet stitch is nice because it is twice as tall as a single crochet stitch making your progress much faster. This is another basic crochet stitch. Watch how to make a double crochet stitch here.

Adorable Messy Bun Hat Tips and Tricks

Choosing Your Hook Size

When it comes to choosing crochet hooks, it can become a little bit confusing as to which size works best. For this pattern I have given you my recommended crochet hook size, which is also what I used in making this pattern. However, if your gague is off, meaning that you crochet more loose or tight than I did, you may need to adjust the size of crochet hook you are using, so that the hat turns out the correct size.

Where to find nice Worsted Weight Yarn

I highly recommend using a #4 medium worsted weight yarn for this messy bun hat pattern, rather than bulky yarn or even fine yarn. Bulky yarn can be a bit challenging to work with, and yarn that is finer than medium weight will likely make the hat turn out on the thin side.

I think that you will get the nicest results, as well as have a nice warm hat when finished. I love to get this type of yarn from Hobby Lobby because they have a nice color selection, as well as quality yarn that is nice and soft. You can also find some nice yarn at your local craft store, or even in the craft aisle of large grocery stores.
