Simple Classic Crochet Hat Patterns for Girls

To make this hat, you will start by working from the bottom of the hat. You begin making the band so that it measures the circumference of the girl’s head you are making the hat for.

Typically, a toddler’s head measures between 19 and 20 inches in circumference. You can also take a sewing tape measure and double-check the number of inches around your little one’s head. Once you know what size you are aiming for, simply create the hat band to this size, then sew it to secure it in a circle shape.

Once the hat band is secured in a circle, you can begin creating the top of the hat. You will want to measure how many inches high you will want the hat to be before you start to finish off the top of the hat.

Following these general steps to make a crochet hat for little girls is the perfect way to make sure the hat fits each time. If you want to try making a great hat, let’s jump into some tips and tricks you should know before you start following the step-by-step instructions in the written pattern for these hats.

Why Crochet a Hat?

Making crochet hats is a lot of fun because you get to make them just how you want. This hat pattern is one of my favorites because it is easy to do, and very cute when finished. I will also show you how to crochet a hat for girls in a way that is very easy to make the hat a perfect size.

What’s the Difference Between a Beanie and a Hat?

The main difference between a beanie and a hat is that a beanie is a brimless cap that is snug against your head. A hat can have a brim, as this one does, and this one is more of a winter hat.

Best yarn for Crochet Hats

The type of yarn you decide to use when making this free crochet hat for a girl pattern will determine the overall size of the hat and the texture of the hat. There are many different yarn weights to choose from. Worsted weight yarn is one of the most common kinds of yarn that is used for most crochet projects.

While worsted weight is the most common, there is also bulky yarn, velvet yarn, chunky yarn, and other kinds of soft yarn to choose from. What makes the best yarn for this project? The answer is that it depends on how you want the hat to turn out.

My favorite yarns to use when making this hat pattern, which is also what I recommend using, is velvet yarn. When I was creating this pattern, I used Bernat Baby Velvet yarn in Ever After Pink. This yarn is super soft but still fine so that you don’t end up with a chunky hat. Of course, there are different color options to choose from so that you can select the perfect color for the little girl in your life.

The Hook Size

Each skein of yarn has a recommended hook size on the label of yarn. This is always a great starting place if you aren’t sure what size hook to start with. However, it is important to point out that some people stitch tighter than others, so you may need to increase or decrease the hook size depending on your stitches.

Also, the hook size you use will largely depend on how holey you want the project to turn out. For this crochet hat, I didn’t want there to be large holes, so I used a crochet hook that was slightly smaller than the recommended size. I used a crochet hook size 7 or 4.5 mm hook for this project.

How to Decorate the Hat

There are several different ways you might enjoy decorating this crochet hat for a little girl. One of the easiest ways is to buy a faux fur pom pom, and sew it to the top of the hat after you finish making the hat.

Another fun idea is to make your own yarn pom pom and attach it to the top of the hat. This is a quick and easy way you can decorate the finished hat, by using leftover yarn.

The final idea for your crochet hat is to add a flower as a decoration if desired. For some fun and simple crochet flower ideas make sure you check out How to Crochet Flowers. These instructions will help you make a cute flower you can easily attach to your finished hat as decoration if desired.

Crochet Stitches You Need to Know to Crochet a Hat

There are several basic crochet stitches. Stitches like single crochet and double crochet stitches are often used in very basic patterns, most also require you to use a magic circle as the starting point, but since this pattern starts with the band, and works up, you don’t even have to know that! However, this easy crochet hat pattern uses some even more basic stitches to make the cute hat pattern.

The different crochet stitches used in this pattern include a chain stitch, half double crochet, and a half double crochet decrease. These are all of the basic crochet stitches needed to make this simple hat. Let’s look at each one of these stitches and how to make them.

Chain. To make a chain, you will begin by making a slip knot and placing the loop on your crochet hook. Then to make a chain, you yarn over, by wrapping the yarn from the back of the crochet hook over the top, towards yourself. Then pull the new loop, through the loop previously on the hook. This makes a chain stitch.

Half Double Crochet. To make a half-double crochet stitch, you first yarn over, then insert the hook into the stitch indicated. Yarn over and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook to make a half-double crochet stitch.

Half Double Crochet Decrease.  A half-double crochet decrease is when you make two partial half-double crochet stitches over in two stitches, then combine them so that the overall stitch count decreases.

To make this stitch, first yarn over, then insert your hook into the first stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on your hook. This is the first half.

Next yarn over and insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. There are now five loops on your hook. Yarn over one last time and pull the new loop through the previous five loops on your hook to make a half-double crochet decrease.

Working in the Back Loop. When making a half double crochet stitch there are three main loops you can work in, the front loop, the back loop, and the third loop. When making the band for this hat pattern, I prefer to work either in the back loop or in the third loop to add texture to the band.

How to Measure for Crochet Hat Patterns

There are two main measurements that you will need to know for this hat pattern. Those are the circumference of the person’s head you want to make the hat for, and how tall you want the hat to be.

    Determining Hat Sizes

The hat sizes are largely determined by how long you make the band of this hat pattern. The band should be based on the circumference of the head you are making this project for.

Typically for a toddler size the band should measure between 19 and 20 inches, child size beanie, you will want to make the band approximately 20 to 21 inches, and for an adult approximately 22 inches long.

You can then make the hat as tall as desired. Keep in mind it’s always better to make it a little taller than you think it needs to be, as you can always roll the brim up if needed.
