Crochet Cup Cozy Pattern

In this free pattern, I am excited to show you how to make your own diy coffee cozy pattern. You can use the coffee cozy on disposable cups, or around reusable cups. You can also easily convert these cozies into mug cozies if you want.

To make this pattern, you will need to know a few basic crochet stitches, like a chain stitch, a single crochet stitch, and double crochet stitches. If you are brand new to crocheting or would like a refresher, be sure to check out my Learning How to Crochet tutorial to see how each one of these basic crochet stitches is made before you begin making your coffee cup cozy.

Use Them or Gift Them

This pattern for a crochet cup cozy is a fun and easy project that you can make in a short amount of time. Perhaps you are looking for something to have on hand to help protect your hand against the hot or coldness of your coffee cup.

Or if you are looking for the perfect gift idea, these coffee cup cozies make great gifts for anyone on your list! They are a quick crochet project that you can make and give away as a nice gift for the coffee lovers, or even the person that you don’t know what to give. These cozies are a great gift idea.

The Yarn

When you are selecting the yarn for your cup cozy, you will want to choose a nice worsted weight yarn, usually not any larger than a medium weight yarn so that you can easily work with it.

As far as the type of yarn to use, you can use acrylic yarn if you want to, however, the best option is going to be when you use 100% cotton yarn. This way you won’t have to worry about something happening to the yarn if it gets too hot.

Now that you know the basics about the coffee cup cozy crochet pattern, let’s get started by jumping into the written pattern for this project.

Tips and Variations

Measure your Cup

Keep in mind that not all coffee cups are the same size, depending on what cup you are making cozy to fit, especially if you want it to cover a larger cup. It’s always a good idea to measure your cup before you begin just to make sure it will fit.

Twisted Crochet Cup Cozy – Written Pattern

In addition to making a basic coffee cup cozy, you can also make it twisted if you want! To make it twisted, you will create the crochet fabric for the cozy as instructed above. Then, rather than simply attaching the two ends together, to form a circle you will want to twist it.

To twist the cup cozy, fold the crochet cup cozy in half so that the two ends meet. Then lay the top one, halfway on top of the bottom one. Pick it up, and wrap the top one, around the now middle end, so that it forms a “u” shape around the other end. Now, fold the other side, so that it also forms a “u” shape around the first side. For a step-by-step picture tutorial, check out this twisted pattern, the concept will be the same on how to twist it.

Mug Cozy Pattern

In addition to using this pattern to make cup cozies, you can also make a mug cozy. Mug cozies are very similar, you will just want to add a chain loop at each end so that the cozy has a place to attach around the mug’s handle.

To make a mug cozy, simply follow the pattern above, making sure to measure for your specific mug size. Then, don’t sew the cozy together in a circle. Rather, add a chain loop, just long enough to reach from the top to the bottom of your cozy on each end. These chain loops will be used to secure the mug cozy to the mug handle.

Substituting Yarn

If needed, you can use a different type of yarn. The best type to use, especially if the cozy is going to be used for hot drinks, is 100% cotton yarn. That way you don’t have to worry about it melting on you. If your cozy is only going to be used for cold drinks, then there’s no problem using acrylic yarn.

FAQs

What Size Should a Cup Cozy Be?

Most cup cozies are designed to fit a takeout drink like a disposable Starbucks cup. However, that doesn’t mean this is the size you have to make. You can measure any cup and make the cozy to fit it.

What Yarn is Best to Crochet a Cup Cozy?

The best yarn to use when making a crochet cozy sleeve is not acrylic yarn. The best yarn is 100% cotton yarn. Some of my favorite cotton yarns are found at Hobby Lobby in their 100% cotton yarn line, or you can get Lion Brand’s 24/7 cotton yarn. Both are great options.

What crochet hook size should I use?

The size of your crochet hook will largely depend on what yarn you use. Each skein of yarn will have a recommended hook size for that specific yarn, right on the label. Otherwise, you can choose a size H or G size crochet hook, depending on how loose or tight you want your stitches to be. Feel free to adjust your hook size as desired for tighter or looser crochet stitches.
