A sewing machine
Scissors
Cutting board and rotary cutter
Ruler
Thread
Bow Cutting Measurements
I used a fat quarter of fabric from Hobby Lobby to make this hair bow. The main piece will be cut at 22 inches long by 6 inches wide. Then the center piece will be 2 inches wide, by approximately 3-4 inches long. Keep in mind, you can trim off any extra from the center piece.
How To Make A Hair Bow
Step 1 – Cut Fabric
Start by ironing the fabric you intend to use for the hair bow. Then, cut out your main bow piece, and center piece that will be used as the tie. The main bow piece should be 22 inches long by 6 inches wide, and the center piece 2 inches wide by 4 inches long.
Optional: (I made a straight edge in the one pictured)
To make the bow shape with the bow piece, angle your ruler so that it rests at the end of your fabric, then the other end sets ½ inch in from the end. Trim both bow ends, so that they are pointed. This gives both ends an angle to make the bow look more finished.
Step 2 – Stitch The Bow Fabric
Once the fabric has been cut out, it is time to start sewing the two pieces. Start by folding both pieces of fabric in half, so that the right sides are together.
Sew a long seam along the raw edges of your fabric. Leave approximately a 1 inch space in the side of your bow pieces without stitching on the long raw edge, so that you can turn the fabric right side out later. Except for this opening, sew around the rest of the bow’s raw edges, with the fabric wrong sides out.
Step 3 – Turn and Iron
The next step is to trim the tip of your seam, for the bow piece, then turn the bow piece and center piece right side out. You may need to use a stick or dull pointed tool to push the corners out.
Iron the bow pieces so that the bow pieces both lay flat. Turn the center bow piece so that the seam goes down the center back before ironing if possible.
Step 4 – Fold And Shape
Now comes the fun part, shaping the fabric pieces into a bow. With your long bow piece, lay it on a flat surface and find your center point. Divide your bow into three pieces, the center, and two ends.
Lay the bow piece so that the center portion lays flat, then turn both ends under, so that they cross over each other below the center portion.
Find the center of the bow, and use your fingers to pinch it together. Secure the bow loops in place by wrapping the pinched section with thread and tying it securely.
You can also sew the center of the shaped bow by hand, if desired but it is not required.
Step 5 – Create Bow Center
Now that your bow has been shaped, it’s time to add the center piece over the pinched center of the bow, where your thread is tied.
To do this, wrap the center piece around the middle of the bow. You may need to trim off extra fabric if you have too much. It is my preference to use pinking scissors to trim the fabric, then fold the raw edges under.
At this point, if you are using a hair tie to hold the bow on, you will want to wrap the center loop around the hair tie as well. Otherwise, the barrette can be added later.
Use a needle and thread to sew the center in place. I like to sew only the center loop, but make sure to sew the loop securely before finishinging it out.
Step 6 – Finishing Touches
To finish your hair bow with a barret, turn the bow over so that the back of the bow faces you. Add a dot of hot glue to the center tie piece, and press the middle of the barrette to the hot glue. Hold the barrette in place until the glue is set.
Another option is to insert the barrette under the center loop of the bow. Then add a couple dots of hot glue to the back of the barrette, to attach it to the bow. Some barretts also have holes in the top, so that you can sew the barrette to the bow so that it is extra secured.
Trim any thread pieces you may have, then your hair bow is finished and ready to enjoy using!
