Why this Amigurumi Bee pattern is so easy?

This amigurumi honey bee pattern is so easy to make because it is a very basic shape. When you make this honey bee, you will use a basic single crochet stitch, along with a single crochet increase, and a single crochet decrease.

How easy is this pattern?

This free honey bee crochet pattern is quite easy to make. If you love crocheting stuffed animals but are pretty new to crocheting, this is a great pattern to start out making. You will need to know the basics of crocheting, but once you have the basic stitches mastered, this is a very fun project to make.

What is the best yarn to use for amigurumi bees?

The best type of yarn to use when you are making these cute little honey bees is a nice, soft, medium-weight yarn. If you are feeling adventurous, you could also try using a velvet yarn, but that might be a little more difficult to use. You can also choose to use a worsted weight yarn if you want. Just be aware that your thinner yarn will make a smaller honey bee.

Basic Crochet Stitches:

Chain. The chain stitch is often used as the foundation crochet stitch for many different crochet projects. If you are new, be sure to check out my easy tutorial, to learn how to make a chain stitch.

Single Crochet. A single crochet stitch is another type of crochet stitch used in many different crochet projects. The single crochet stitch is one of the basic stitches, but it is also one of the shortest crochet stitches. Learn how to make a single crochet stitch!

Slip Stitch. A slip stitch can be used as a crochet stitch by itself to create projects, or it can be used in your crochet projects to join a round or get you from one location to another one. If you don’t know how, check out my easy tutorial to learn how to make a slip stitch

Magic Ring (AKA Magic Circle). A magic ring is also known as a magic circle. The names are often used interchangeably but can reference the same beginning crochet stitch. This stitch is special, because it is used to make round crochet projects, and can be tightened so that you don’t have an open circle in the middle of your project.

How to Crochet a Magic Circle

Learning how to make a magic ring or magic circle can be a little tricky when you are just starting out. Because of this, I have created a step-by-step tutorial to walk you through the process. You can also watch this quick video to see how to make a magic ring.

Invisible Decrease

There are a few different ways that you can decrease your overall number of stitches in a round, which is what you will need to do when closing your crochet honey bee. The first way you can do this is by making a 2-together single crochet (2togsc). This is when you combine two stitches, into one. The other way, and often the better way, is to make an invisible decrease. This way your decrease stitch looks the same as the rest of your stitches, but you still accomplish your goal of decreasing the overall number of stitches in a specific round. Watch this short video to learn how.

Single Crochet Increase

The last basic crochet stitch you will need to know is the single crochet increase stitch. This is very basic, you will simply make two single crochet stitches in the same stitch to increase the overall number of stitches in that round. Check out this short video to learn how.

Amigurumi Techniques to Know for Crochet Bees

When you are making amigurumi, or crochet animals like this cute amigurumi bee, one of the main crochet stitches you will need to know are the increase and decrease stitches like we mentioned above.

Basic Amigurumi Increase Pattern

When you make an increase stitch, it is usually made using single crochet stitches, where you simply make two single crochet stitches in the same stitch. This increases your overall number of stitches, and gives your amigurumi animal it’s shape.

Basic Amigurumi Decrease Pattern

There are a few different ways you can decrease your amigurumi crochet toy. That is by making a single crochet two together, or by using an invisible decrease. The best overall results will be when you use the invisible decrease, but sometimes it’s too difficult, and you will need to use a single crochet two together (sc2tog) as your backup stitch.

Tips for Crocheting Amigurumi Bees

Yarn for your crochet bee

You likely won’t need to use an entire skein of each color. But you will want to have each color of yarn on hand to make this crochet honey bee.

Use stitch markers to track your rounds.

Using stitch markers to keep track of each round is a good idea, especially if you are new to crocheting. Simply place the stitch marker at the beginning of each round, so you know where one starts and ends.

Use a smaller-than-usual crochet hook to create a tight fabric.

When you are making crochet amigurumi, like this little honey bee, it is a good idea to use a smaller crochet hook than you are used to. This way you won’t have holes in your little bee. I have suggested using a 4.00 mm hook, but you might need to try one or two sizes smaller, to make nice, tight stitches.

Consider embroidered eyes instead of safety eyes or buttons.

Making embroidered eyes, rather than using the safety eyes is a good idea, especially if you are making this honey bee crochet pattern for babies or toddlers. That way you don’t have to worry about the eyes coming off and causing a choking hazard.

Can you make these honey bees in different sizes?

Yes, you can! All you have to do is change the type of yarn you are using, by using different yarn weights, to try chunky yarn, or baby yarn. Then make sure to change your crochet hook accordingly.

You can also make these honey bees in different sizes, by adding more stitches to your magic ring, or subtracting the number of stitches in your magic ring. You can make tiny bees, or large bees, depending on your preference!
