How to make a quick & easy felt ball garland

Easy Felt Ball Garland Materials

Pom Poms. Using a package of felt pom-poms from your local craft store is an easy option for making this type of garland. Another option would be to use wool balls or make your own felt balls from pieces of wool.

String. There are many different options you can use for a string to hold your pom-poms in a garland. One of my favorite options is to use yarn, cotton thread, embroidery thread, a skein of embroidery floss, baker’s twine, or just regular durable string. The kind of cord you choose to use is entirely up to you, and what overall look you are going for. Keep in mind the thickness of the string should be durable, but not super thick.

Wooden Beads (optional). Adding some wooden beads, or any type of beads in between your pom-poms is a fun way to mix things up. Another fun idea is to use different sizes of pom-poms so that you have a variety of shapes on your garland. It’s entirely up to you how you want to go about doing this, or if you even want to use wooden beads.

Tools

A Large Needle. You will also want to have a large needle, like a large embroidery needle handy. Whatever kind of string you choose to use needs to be able to fit through the eye of your large needle so that you can string the pom-poms onto your string.

Scissors. To help you cut the string or thread as needed.

Step-Sy-Step Tutorial: DIY Garland

Let’s first look at the easiest way to make this felt ball garland, using pom-poms, or pre-made felt balls.

Preparing to Make a DIY Ball Garland

Before you begin making your felt ball garland, you will want to first gather all of your supplies to have everything ready to go.

Determine the Length

Then determine the length you want the felt ball garland to be. You will want to make sure you have enough felt balls or pom poms, and cut the string so that it is plenty long.

Step 1: Select your balls

First, lay your pom-poms out, and arrange them in your desired color and pattern order. Remember you can use different sizes of felt pom-poms, to give your felt garland a textured look.

Step 2: Set up your needle & thread

After you have your color pattern determined, take the string and cut your desired length. Then tie a little loop in one end, this will help you hang it later. Now, take the other end of your string, and thread it onto your large needle.

Step 3: Pierce the felt balls

Push the needle through the center of the first ball, to thread it onto your string, to the other end, and rest it at your desired location. Repeat this process with your desired color pattern, to make your felt ball garland.

Tip: Depending on your specific felt balls or pom-poms, you may need to tie a knot on each side of the pom-poms to hold them in place. Another option would be to use beads as spacers to hold your pom-poms in place if they are sliding around on your string. Some types of pom-poms don’t have this problem and will stay right where you place them.

Another great option is simply to string pom-poms onto your garland so that there is no bare space in between. This means your pom-poms are resting next to each other, which will create their own spacing.

Step 4: Arrange your pom poms

Once you have all of the felt balls on your string, you will want to spread them out and arrange them as you want them to set.

Step 5: Finish off the garland

After all of your pom-poms are threaded onto your garland, and placed at your desired location, tie another little loop at the other end, so that both ends of your football garland have loops for hanging. You are now ready to hang your felt ball garland in your desired location.

How to Hang Your Felt Garland

There are many fun ways you can enjoy hanging your felt garland when it is finished. Here are a few ideas for you:

Room Decoration

One of my favorite ways to hang a felt ball garland is as a room decoration. You can hang it in a doorway, or the corner of the room. Another fun way to hang is is from a fire place mantle. The options of ways you can use this cute felt ball garland as a room decoration are unlimited.

Curtain Accent

Another fun way to hang your felt ball garland is on a curtain, as an accent feature. One of my nieces enjoys doing this. It adds a bit of cheerfulness to her room this way.

On a Christmas Tree

The other idea I wanted to share with you is to make a Christmas-themed felt ball garland and hang it from your Christmas tree. This is a fun and festive way to enjoy your creation.

DIY Felting Process: Making Your Own Felt Balls

Another alternative to using store-bought felt balls or pom-poms to make your garland is to make your own felt balls for your garland. To do this you will need the following items:

Wool Felt

Hot Water

Soapy Water

A Towel

How to Make Felt Balls

First, take the piece of wool in your desired color and pull it so that it is thinned. When you hold it up to the light, there should be no dark sections, instead, you should be able to see through the woolen fibers evenly.

Wool felting is not necessarily an exact science. Instead, you kind of have to work the piece of felt as needed to make your felt ball.

To start making your felt ball, hold the thinned piece of wool in the palms of your hands. Squirt a little bit of soapy water into the felt ball, then slowly work it and fold it into a ball.

For the best results you will start off with a gentle touch, then as you work the felt into a ball and your touch will gradually become firmer.

After the felt has been worked into a loose ball, dip it into the hot water, then roll it between the palms of your hands loosely. Continue this process gradually making the pressure firmer between the palms of your hands. When you have a nice, solid ball, squeeze out any excess water.

You now have a solid felt ball that can be added to your felt ball garland, after it dries. Keep in mind there are a bit of variations to this method, but this gives you a general idea of how to work a piece of woolen felt into a felt ball. Now that you are aware of the different options for felt balls, you can choose your favorite felt ball garland tutorial, to make your DIY felt ball garland.
