cute crochet cow

I love to make these crochet cow plushies, and I am very excited to share my free crochet pattern with you so you can enjoy making them too! I hope that you will enjoy making my free pattern and that you will enjoy the adorable cow when you are finished.

This crochet cow pattern is made using a few basic stitches, then once each body part is created, you can assemble the cow into an adorable stuffed animal creation. Plus, you get to add your own embellishments to the cute cow as well.

Let’s begin by taking a look at the basic crochet stitches you will need to know in order to make this crochet cow.

Crochet Techniques for Crochet Cow Patterns

Single Crochet

A single crochet stitch is a must-know stitch for making an amigurumi cow. In addition to the basic single crochet stitch, you will also need to make single crochet increase stitches, and single crochet decrease stitches. When you are making a single crochet decrease, I highly recommend using an invisible decrease so that it isn’t as visible. To see the difference between the two decreased stitches, you can see them in this video.

Magic Ring (aka Magic Circle)

Making a magic ring or magic circle for amigurumi crochet projects is another great crochet stitch to know. The magic circle allows you to pull it nice and tight. To learn how to make a magic ring, be sure to check out my magic ring tutorial. If you are not able to make the magic ring, you may also use the chain two methods, as it is sometimes difficult to get yarns to cooperate for this stitch.

    How to Color Change

The last technique that I wanted to mention before we jump into the cow crochet pattern is how to make a color change in your crochet project. The best, and easiest way is to simply loop your new color over your crochet hook as you work your stitches. Then come back and tie the two strands together before you cut them. If possible, you can also crochet over the loose yarn ends.

    assembling the cow

    Assembling the Cow

Now that all of the cow pieces are made, it’s time to assemble the cow. To do this you will need a yarn needle and some spare yarn. Sew each of the body parts together, starting by assembling the head, then the body, then attaching them securely together. If desired, I like to add a loop of yarn between the eyes, to give it added shape.

Tips and Tricks for Crochet Cow Patterns

Take precautions to avoid frustrating mistakes.

Sometimes when making amigurumi crochet patterns, it can be very frustrating to find out you made a mistake a few rounds back. Then you have to try and figure out how to fix them. It is often best to take your time and make sure you are accurately following the pattern.

Keep your project safe for kids.

If you are making this crochet cow pattern for little ones, it is a wise idea to replace the safety eyes with embroidered eyes. This way, you don’t have to worry about the eyes becoming a potential choking hazard.

    Working in the Round

In the pattern instructions above, I have suggested that you work the cow in individual rounds. Honestly, this is much easier for me to do, and is my preference, which is why I have written it this way. However, you may work this pattern in continuous rounds if you prefer. Essentially this is when one round leads into the next, and it is one big continuous spiral. Just make sure, if you choose to work in continuous rounds, you are using stitch markers to keep track of where each round starts and ends.

    Changing Colors

For this cow pattern, you will need to change colors in a few different places. When you do this, you can simply loop the new yarn over the old and start working with the new. If possible, go back and tie a knot once the colors have been changed, and then either crochet over the yarn tails or go back and tuck them in so that the yarn ends aren’t visible.

    crochet cow from other side

What is the best yarn for crochet cow patterns?

I highly recommend using velvet yarn for this crochet cow pattern. When you use velvet yarn it will make your stuffy so soft and cuddly when it is finished. I used Bernat velvet yarn for this specific project. Just make sure you are using regular velvet yarn rather than baby velvet yarn.

You may use other types of yarn for this project if you prefer. Yarn options such as a nice soft acrylic yarn is a good option, as well as a worsted weight yarn. Just make sure the yarn isn’t too fine, or your cow will end up being very small.

What hook size should I use for this pattern?

I recommend using a size 4.5 mm crochet hook, to make this little cow. However, if your stitches are turning out too loose, or too tight, you may need to increase or decrease your hook size accordingly.

Is a crochet cow plushie a good beginner project?

I would not recommend this crochet cow pattern as a beginner project. It is more of an intermediate crochet project. If you are a beginner who is just starting out, you might enjoy exploring some of these great beginner crochet patterns
