How to Crochet a Winter Beanie
Overview of the Process
Before we jump into the pattern, I wanted to take a minute and give you a quick overview of the crochet pattern, and how this fun winter hat comes together. To start off, you are going to create the winter hat fabric. This is going to be in the shape of a rectangle.
You want the height of the hat to measure at least the height of the person’s head you are making it to fit. I like to make it extra long, so that there is enough left to fold the hat up, creating a band.
Then measure the circumference of the person’s head you are making the hat for. You will want to crochet the hat fabric to be at least that length so that the hat fits the person you intend to make it for. Don’t worry, if you don’t know the exact measurements of the person you want to make this hat pattern for, I have provided a chart below the pattern with average sizes to help you out.
Once the crochet fabric is made, it is then time to shape the winter hat into a hat. This is done by slip stitching the sides together, the gathering inside of the top of the hat, before sewing it in place. Don’t worry! The process is really quite easy, and this style of pattern allows you to easily adjust the size as needed.
Classic Crochet Winter Beanie Pattern
Row 1: ch 55 sts, or as many stitches as needed to reach your desired height. I made mine so that it measures 13 inches tall.
In the 3rd ch space from the hook, make a hdc st, hdc in each st across.
Row 2-5: ch 1, turn, sl st in the BLO of each st across the row.
Row 6: ch 2, hdc in each st across the row, working in the BLO.
Repeat rows 2-6 until the hat is big enough to go around the head you are making this for. I made mine so that it measures approximately 22 inches.
How to Seam the Hat:
Now that you have the fabric created it is time to start shaping the crochet material into a hat.
To close the side of the hat, you will fold the hat in half so that the short ends meet. The side you are working with will be the inside of the hat. Slip stitch through both sides of the hat, to close the hat. Only the top and bottom of the hat will be left open at this time.
Finish out the hat, but be sure to leave a long tail of yarn for sewing. Thread the yarn tail through a yarn needle or tapestry needle.
Stitch around the top of the hat, weaving the yarn in and out as you go. Once you have worked your way around the entire circumference of the hat, pull the yarn tight.
Hold the gathered yarn tight together, and stitch through the top to be sure the top is sewn together. Please note, I like to stitch the top a lot, so that I am sure it holds fast.
When you are finished, tie a knot and weave in the ends of your yarn. Turn the hat right side out.
Adding a Pom Pom
A fun way to finish out this hat is to add a pom pom to the top of the hat. This can be a yarn pom pom or a faux fur pom pom that you purchased. Whichever one you choose, be sure to sew it securely to the top of your hat.

How To Measure For Crochet Beanies
Because this hat starts out as being created in a rectangle shape that you sew into a hat, you will want to know the length and width you want it to be. To determine this, the easiest way is to measure the person’s head you are making the hat for.
The long end of the crochet fabric will be the circumference of the person’s head, and the short end is the height of the person’s head plus a couple of inches to roll the hat band up. However, if you are not able to measure the person’s head, here is an estimated size chart to help you out.

Simple Hat for Babies, Children, and Adults
One of the great things about this hat pattern is that it can easily be made into different sizes, including adult size, child sized, and even small enough for babies. All you have to do is make your crochet fabric larger or smaller, otherwise the process is the same.
Best Yarn for Crochet Hats
The best yarn that I like to use to make these crochet winter hats is a nice soft, #4 medium weight yarn. My favorite place to get this yarn is Hobby Lobby because the yarn is so soft, and they have many color options in this yarn type.
You may also use bulky yarn or even fine yarn if you prefer. However, if you do, please be sure to change your hook size accordingly. You will still want to check the measurements of the hat to be sure it is turning out the right size.
Crochet Hat Pattern Variations:
The great thing about this crochet beanie pattern is that you can use a variety of stitches to make this hat. I love how the combination of half double crochet stitches and slip stitches come together to make an almost knit look hat.
I love to use the stitch combination because it makes a pretty texture and gives the hat added character. There are so many different types of stitches you can use to make this type of crochet winter beanie. Flat Or In The Round?
This pattern instructs you to make the hat pattern by first making a flat rectangle and then shaping it into the perfect hat. There are many ways to make a crochet hat, some patterns instruct you to start at the top, others start at the bottom. Some work in a round or patterns like this one make it flat then shape it. This pattern is great because you can easily adjust the size to fit any person you want to make it for.
