Square Crochet Pattern Tips and Tricks

What size crochet hook should I use?

There are many different sizes of crochet hooks to choose from, so which one is the best option? Ultimately, the size of crochet hook that you choose to use for your simple squares will depend on what type of yarn you use. A good rule of thumb is to reference the yarn label to see what size hook the manufacturer recommends.

Remember, you can always adjust the crochet hook size that you use to be larger or smaller, depending on your stitching style as well. If you tend to crochet with loose stitches, you may want to decrease your hook size by one or two sizes, in the same applies if you tend to crochet tight stitches, you may want to increase the size of a hook you use.

What yarn weight is best?

The yarn weight that you choose to use will depend on what project you want to make with a simple crochet square. Often, if you are just starting to crochet, I would highly recommend choosing a medium worsted, weight yarn, ideally a number for weight yarn is a great place to start.

The type of yarn you use will determine how your squares turn out, and what size crochet hook you need to use. I would highly recommend that you use a nice smooth yarn when you are just starting to learn this pattern, and stay away from bulky weight yarns.

Using scrap yarn in various colors.

When you are making these simple squares, it’s a great way to use up your scrap yarn. You can do different rounds of your squares in different colors of yarn, or change up the colors however you prefer.

is there a right side and a wrong side to the granny square pattern?

as long as you make your crochet stitches through both loops, both sides of the square will be the same.
