Basic Crochet Stitches

These patterns are also great for crocheters of each skill level. Some are perfect for the beginner crocheter, while others are a little more advanced.

If you are a beginner at crocheting, let’s look at some of the basic crochet stitches you will want to know, in order to follow these patterns. Let’s look first at the simple crochet stitches that every crocheter should know how to make.

Making a Magic Circle. Making a magic circle, which is also known as a magic ring is very important to start around projects. You will want to know how to make a magic circle, especially if the crochet hat pattern starts at the top of the head and works its way down. Single Crochet Stitches. Making a single crochet stitch is one of the basic crochet stitches. To make a single crochet, interior hook into the stitch indicated, yarn over by wrapping the yarn around the hook, from the back towards the front, or toward you that to make a yarn over. Pull the new loop up using the crochet hook. There are now two loops on the hook. Yarn over once more and pull through the two loops on the hook. This makes a single crochet stitch.

Half-Double Crochet Stitch. To make a half-double crochet stitch, you first yarn over then insert the hook into the stitch indicated. Yarn over again and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.

Double Crochet Stitches. To make a double crochet stitch, you first yarn over then insert the hook into the stitch indicated. Yarn over and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on the hook. Yard over once more and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook. This makes a double crochet stitch.

A Slip Stitch. To make a slip stitch, you will insert the hook into the stitch indicated, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Then take this new loop and pull it through the loop that was previously on the hook. This makes a slip stitch.

Hats in Different Sizes

Most hat patterns are designed to fit an average head. The average head circumference is usually around 21 to 23 inches. One of the great things about making your own crocheted hat is that you can adjust the sizes as needed.

If you need smaller sizes, then you’ll want to make sure to add fewer stitches to the hat. But if you need larger sizes, then you can continue to increase the hat until it is your desired size.

The Type of Yarn

There are many different yarn weights to choose from. To make a nice winter hat you might choose to use a bulky yarn or soft velvet yarn. If you choose to use a worsted-weight yarn, then you might want to use two strands of worsted-weight yarn since it tends to be a little thinner, especially if you are making a winter hat. Make sure to check out all the different yarns you have available and see which ones you like the best.

Crochet Hook Size

The crochet hook size that you use will be determined by what type of yarn you select. Each hat pattern will have a suggested hook size included in it, but you can also reference the package of your yarn skein as well.

Each skein of yarn has packaging on it, with a suggested hook size for that specific yard. The general rule of thumb for your normal, medium-weight worsted-weight yarn is to use a hook size of approximately H or I, usually around 5.0 mm or 5.5 mm. You can feel free to adjust the hook size as needed.

Decorations for the Top of the Hat

There are a few different things you can use to decorate the top or side of the hat if desired. Some ideas include using a faux fur pom pom where you can create a yarn pom pom to attach to the top of the crochet hat. Another fun idea is to make some crocheted flowers and attach them to the bottom of the hat or the side of the hat.

Suggested Materials

In order to make a crocheted hat, you will want to have a few skeins of yarn and a crochet hook, and I also recommend having a yarn needle, or tapestry needle on hand to weave in the end or attach items such as a yarn pom-pom. You might also consider using stitch markers so that you can tell where the beginning and end of each round is.
