Before we jump into the step-by-step pattern tutorial, let’s first look at what type of yarn you should use to make crocheted wash cloths, what size of crochet hook you need, as well as some tips and tricks for making your crocheted washcloths turn out amazing.

The Best Yarn For This Washcloth

When you are making wash cloths it’s important that you use 100% cotton yarn, or worsted weight cotton yarn to make your project. This is because the other types of yarn will not hold up, or last as wash cloths.

You can find cotton yarn available in different colors, and even color combinations of new yarns available at your local craft store. Personally, I like to choose a nice soft yarn for my kitchen projects, but you can choose whatever you prefer.

One of the best choice options for yarn is to go to Hobby Lobby and check out their 100% cotton yarn, sugar ’n cream, or look for peaches and cream cotton yarn.

How much yarn you choose to use to make your wash cloth is entirely up to your personal preference on size. I will give you a recommendation below, of how much yarn to use, and what size to make it, but you can feel free to adjust the size as desired. There is no right or wrong size, just keep in mind you’ll have to adjust how much yarn is needed.

Crochet Hook Size

Another important aspect is choosing the correct hook size for your crocheted washcloth. Typically, the most common sizes of hooks to use are size H (5.0mm) or I (5.5mm), but you might need to adjust the hook size depending on how loose or tight your crochet stitches are naturally and depending on what specific type of yarn you choose to use.

Make sure to reference the wrapper of your yarn, to see what size of hook is recommended for that specific yarn. Most yarns will give a recommendation right on the label as to what size of hook you should use, which is generally pretty accurate. From there you can either increase or decrease the size hook, depending on your stitch sizes.

If you want to add additional texture to your washcloth, this can easily be done, like crocheting in the back loop of each stitch from the previous row. This will add additional texture as you go.

Adjust Size as Desired

Feel free to adjust the size of this pattern as desired. If you want it to be larger, simply add more chains to the first row, or if you want it to be smaller, then decrease the number of chains made at the beginning. It’s entirely up to you!

Optional Boarder

You could also make a border around this washcloth if desired. I will show you how in the details that follow, but know this is completely optional, it does not have to be done if you wish to skip it.

The Basic Crochet Stitches

In this stitch tutorial, we are going to use a stitch known as a moss stitch, or linen stitch. This is an easy stitch pattern, made traditionally with a chain as the base, then alternating a single crochet stitch and a chain stitch to make the body of your project. In addition to using a single crochet stitch, you could also use double crocheted stitches or a half double crochet stitch.

In the pattern below, I recommend using a half double crochet stitch, because it gives the stitches a little more height so that the project goes slightly faster. This is an easy stitch pattern that you can make very easily, it is great for a simple yet elegant project.

This moss stitch has a great texture to the finished project as well. The moss stitch or linen stitch will work out well for projects that you want to have more of a solid body, rather than a lot of holes. Therefore, it’s also known as a linen stitch because it makes great linen-like items.

This stitch pattern is made by alternating your single crochet or half double crochet with a chain stitch, and repeating this across the entire row. The following row is made by creating the single crochet or half double crochet stitch into the chain stitch from the previous row and alternating the pattern once more. It’s the perfect pattern to make a crocheted washcloth.

This easy pattern is made using a few basic stitches. You can choose to use single crochet stitches, half double crochet stitches, or even double crocheted stitches alternated with a chain space if desired. These basic stitches are easy to make and make a gorgeous free pattern for crocheted washcloths. Now, let’s turn our attention to this easy crochet dishcloth pattern.

How to Make a Chain

To make a chain, you’ll first start by making a slip knot near the end of your yarn. Placed a slip knot over your crochet hook, and tighten it slightly, to make sure that it is still loose. With your pointer finger, hold the slipknot in place then wrap your yarn from the back of the hook around to the front of the hook. Pull the new yarn through your slip knot, this makes your first chain stitch.

Repeat by wrapping your yarn over from the back of the hook to the front, this is called a yarn over or “YO”. Pull the yarn over through the previous loop on your hook. Each of these stitches counts as one chain space.

How to Make a Single Crochet

To make a single crochet stitch, you first want to start off by making the chain as the base for your project. Then insert the hook into the stitch indicated. Yarn over and pull a loop through the space. There are now two loops on your hook. Yarn over once more and pull through both loops on the hook. This makes a single crochet stitch.

How to Make a Half-Double Crochet

To make a half double crochet stitch, you first want to yarn over, then insert your hook into the stitch indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on the hook. Yarn over once more and pull the new loop through the previous three loops on your hook. This makes a half-double crochet stitch.

How to Make a Double Crochet

To make a double crochet stitch, you will first wrap yarn over, then insert your hook into the stitch indicated. Yarn over once more and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on your hook. Yarn over once more and pull through the first two loops on your hook. Yarn over again and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook. This is a double crochet stitch.
