Even if you are not a beginner crocheter, you can still enjoy making these fun dish towels!

Best Yarn for a Crochet Washcloth or Towel

Before you begin, it’s important to choose the correct kind of yarn to make a dish towel out of. The best type of yarn is to use a worsted weight cotton yarn. You can find this in solid colors or variegated skeins. When you’re at the store, you will want to look for 100% cotton yarn, which can be found at Hobby Lobby, or in brands like lily sugar n’ cream.

There are many different color options, so make sure you choose the perfect colors for your specific project! Crocheted towels make a fun accent to your kitchen and are also beautiful gifts.

How much yarn you need will depend on what specific size and how many yards each skein has on it. Below I will give you a recommendation on how much yarn to use, but you can feel free to increase or decrease the finished size of the dish towel to fit your preferences.

You will also want to keep in mind that each person stitches slightly different, so my stitches might be slightly tighter than yours, which will impact how much yarn is needed. Feel free to adjust to fit your specific needs.

Consider Yarn Weight

When you are selecting a nice cotton yarn to use for your crochet dishcloths, keep in mind that the yarn weight will determine how thick your towel is, and how your overall project will turn out.

I like to use the peaches and cream yarn from Walmart because it has a nice soft texture for the kitchen towels. They turn out very lovely when you are finished.

Another great yarn to use is the crafter’s secret yarn from Hobby Lobby. It’s not quite as soft as the Peaches and Cream yarn, but it comes in a lot of different color options, and it a little bit thicker of an option.

Choosing a Crochet Hook Size

My favorite size crochet hook to use when making crochet dish towels is a size 7, or 4.5 mm crochet hook. Sometimes the size of the hook can be difficult to find, so using a size H (5.0mm), I (5.0mm), or even size G (4.25mm) crochet hooks work as good alternatives depending on how tight or lose you naturally crochet.

You can also reference the packaging of your yarn skein to see what the manufacturer recommends for hook size for that specific yarn. This is a good reference guide, but you may need to adjust from there.

How to Crochet Kitchen Towels

Making a crochet dish towel is quite easy to do! All you have to do is determine what crochet stitch you want to use, and then decide what size you want to make it, and then start making your beautiful crochet kitchen dish towel.

Stitches for a Hand Towel

There are just a few basic stitches used in this crochet pattern. In addition to making a crocheted chain, the other two main stitches are a single crochet stitch and a double crochet stitch. Let me give you an overview of how to make each of these main stitches.

Single Crochet Stitches

To make a single crochet stitch, you first need to knit the chain as the base of your project. Then to make a single crochet stitch, you insert the hook into the stitch indicated, then yarn over, and pull up a loop. There are now two loops on your hook. Yarn over once more and pull the new loop through the previous two loops on your hook. This makes a single crocheted stitch.

Double Crochet Stitches

A double crochet stitch is made first by yarning over, then insert the hook into the stitch indicated. Yarn over and pull up the loop. There are now three loops on your hook. Yarn over again and pull through the first two loops on the hook. Yarn over once more and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook. This makes a double-crocheted stitch.

Dish Towel Tips

The Number of Chains. The number of chains must be an even number for the project to turn out. You can add or subtract as many chains as you wish, so the finished product is your desired size, as long as you keep an even number.

Color Change. You can change the color as you work along if desired. Sometimes it’s fun to put a few stripes in your kitchen dish towel, or you can make it all a solid color, or even use variegated yarn. It’s entirely up to you whether you use a solid color or change colors along the way.

Washing in a Machine. When you use 100% cotton yarn, crochet dish towels are technically machine washable, but from personal experience I would caution against it. Sometimes washing your crocheted dish towels in the machine can be very rough on them, and you are likely to lose the color of your yarn. It’s entirely up to you, but just use caution if you choose to wash them in the machine.

How to Make a Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc)

Essentially, you are making a double crochet stitch around the stitch on the previous row. To do this, yarn over, then insert your hook around behind the stitch indicated, yarn over, and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook, then yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops on your hook. You have now made a front post double crochet stitch.

The only difference between a front post double crochet stitch, and a normal double crochet stitch is that you are working around the stitch on the previous row, which will give your project texture.

Idea: Make a Matching Dishcloth

If an idea is to make a matching dishcloth for any of these stitch patterns above. That way you can have a crocheted dish towel and matching dishcloths that you can give away as gifts!

How to Modify the Towel Size

One of the great things about making your own crochet kitchen towels is that you can easily modify the size of your dish towels. To do this, you will simply add more or less chain stitches to the initial chain. This will increase or decrease the width of your crochet kitchen towels.

The other way you can easily adjust the size of your kitchen towels is to add more or fewer rows to your kitchen towel. If you add more, your towel will be longer, or fewer rows for a shorter kitchen towel.

Should I add a crochet towel border?

It is entirely up to you if you wish to add a crochet border around the edge of your finished dish towel. I think that they look nice, left without it, but if you are looking to hide some uneven edges, a crochet towel boarder is a great way to do this!
