Adding a Hanging Loop
If you would like, you can add a hanging loop by creating a chain at the back side of the stocking. To do this, chain approximately 21 sts, where you want the hanging loop, Join the chain back to the stocking to create a loop. Then make approximately 20 single crochet stitches in the loop, to complete the hanging loop. Finish off and weave in the yarn ends.

The Best Yarn for Winter Stockings
There are so many different yarn options to choose from. Determining what will work best for your Christmas stockings can be a challenge, especially when you are walking down the yarn isles of your local craft stores.
Although you can use any yarn you wish to make these crochet Christmas stockings, keep in mind that the different yarn weights will cause your finished stocking to turn out different sizes. Otherwise, feel free to use whatever yarn appeals to you.
When making this crochet stocking pattern, I chose to use a medium worsted weight yarn from Hobby Lobby. I like that yarn because they have a lot of options to choose from, I could find it in my desired colors, and the yarn is so nice and soft.
Yarn Weights for Your Crochet Stocking
The different yarn weights available will result in different sizes for your crochet stocking. To get your stocking to turn out to be a very similar size, I would recommend using a medium worsted weight yarn. When you look at the skein packaging this would be a #4 weight yarn.
Make them with Fur Cuffs
To mix things up you might enjoy making these stockings and use faux fur yarn for the cuff. This is a type of bulky weight yarn, and maybe a little challenging to work with. However, the bulky yarn will give you a nice soft cuff to the stocking that adds a bit of elegance to your stocking.
Color Combination Options
There are many different ways you can use color to give your stocking a different appearance. You might choose to make the entire stocking a solid color, or make it a solid color giving just the heel and toe, or maybe the cuff, a different color to accent them.
