Sunflower Crochet Pattern Free
Making crochet sunflowers is a lot of fun, and you can use them in so many ways to bring a little sunshine to brighten your day. In this free pattern, I am going to share some step-by-step instructions with you on how to make this version of a cute sunflower garland crochet pattern.

You can use the crocheted sunflowers in a variety of ways. They are fun to make a crochet flower bouquet out of, or you can use them as decorations around your home, or you may even choose to give them away as the perfect gift to brighten someone’s day, mt favorite is to turn them into a garland to add some extra cuteness to your home decor.
Crochet Sunflower
These crochet sunflowers are unique because they are not like other free crochet sunflower patterns, such as sunflower granny squares, where you will create the square pattern and then you will make it into another project, or a sunflower coaster. Both of those are fun, but these crochet sunflowers allow you to make a type of sunflower, that is both easy and practical. Let’s look at some special stitches you will need to know how to make, to create sunflowers using this pattern.
Special Stitches
To make this sunflower crochet pattern, there are a few basic stitches you will need to know how to crochet. In addition to a basic slip knot, chain stitch, and slip stitch, there are some other foundation crochet stitches.
Magic Ring (aka Magic Circle)
The magic ring is used to start the very center of the sunflower. This is because the magic ring can be pulled nice and tight, leaving no space in the center. If you don’t know how to make this, be sure to check out my easy tutorial.
Single Crochet
A single crochet stitch is another basic crochet stitch that you will need to know how to make in this sunflower crochet pattern. This is a short stitch, that is nice and tight, making it the perfect thing for a crochet amigurumi project.

Double Crochet Stitch
The double crochet stitch is like a single, only twice as tall. The double crochet stitch is another basic crochet stitch to know. If you would like to see how it is made, please check out my tutorial.
Treble Crochet Stitch
A treble crochet stitch is very similar to the double crochet, only a little bit taller. To make this stitch start by yarning over twice, then inserting your hook in the instructed space. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the next two loops, then yarn over and pull through the last two loops to finish out the stitch.
Picot Stitch
A picot stitch is made using a chain stitch and a slip stitch. To make the picot stitch, you will chain three stitches, then insert hook into the 3rd chain from your hook and make a slip stitch in the 3rd chain space from your hook.Â
Half Double Crochet Increase
A half double crochet increase stitch is when you make two single crochet stitches in the same loop. Thereby increasing the overall number of stitches in the row or round.
Now that you know the basic crochet stitches used in this free sunflower crochet pattern, let’s jump right into the pattern.

The great things about these sunflowers is that you can easily make them in different sizes if you want, simply by making the center larger or smaller. To make a smaller version, repeat rounds 1-3, then follow the instructions above to add the flower petals.

How to Assemble Sunflower Garland
Leaf:
Start off by maing a long chain. This is the beginning of the garland, so I would suggest making it at least 20 stitches long before you begin the leaf.
To start the leaf, skip the ch st closest to the hook, then make a sc st, in the next st. Hdc in the next st, dc, then make a tr in the next 2 sts.

Hdc in the next ch space, then ch 1, sl st in the long ch, ch 1, then turn your work over. Make a hdc on the back side of the last hdc st just made.
Working in the back loops, work a tr in the next 2 sts, dc, hdc, then in the last st, make 2 st sts. Join with a sl st to the first sc st made.

Now to finish out the leaf, and get your yarn back to where you started, work a sl st, in each of the sts, down the center of the leaf, until you get back to the long chain. Slip stitch in the chain, then chain at least 20 more stitches, more if desited, to work your way to the next leif as you continue making the garland.

As you work your way acorss the garland, join the sunflowers, by placing a slip stitch in the petal to attach them as you work.
Feel free to place the sunflowers where you want, and make as many flowers and leaves as you wish.

Tips for making the Free Sunflower Crochet Pattern
Add a little Stuffing (optional)
Adding a little bit of stuffing to the center of your sunflower will help give it added character. You won’t need very much, just a little bit will make it super cute. To do this, you will need to make two sunflower centers per flower, one for the back and the other for the front. Then the flower petals to hold them together.
Colors of Yarn
The colors of yarn that you use are entirely up to you. Typically, the sunflower petals are made with a golden yellow color, accompanied by a green color for the stem and leaves and brown for the center. Keep in mind though that this is your project, so feel free to make the sunflower using your favorite color combinations.
Make it a Garland
My favorite way to use these sunflowers is to make a chain out of the green yarn, then attach the finished sunflowers and leaves to the green chain, making it into a pretty garland you can hang around your house.
What is the best yarn weight to use in this pattern?
There are many different types of yarn to choose from, so what should you use for this pattern? You can choose to use cotton yarn or acrylic yarn for this pattern, either one will work. As far as the yarn weight, a nice, #4 medium-weight yarn is ideal, or you may use a nice worsted weight yarn. If you use thinner yarn, the flower will turn out a bit smaller.
How much yarn do you need?
You don’t need to have a lot of yarn to make these sunflowers. This is a great crochet project to use up some scrap yarn you might already have on hand. This is a great project to use up some of your yarn leftovers, and you can make these sunflowers in your favorite colors too!
What hook size should I use?
I would suggest using a smaller crochet hook size for this project so that your stitches are nice and tight. In the pattern above, I have given my recommended crochet hook size, but feel free to adjust the size as needed.
