Pattern Notes Before You Begin

Best yarn for Bucket Hats

Before you begin making this bucket hat pattern, it is important to point out that some types of yarn are going to work much better than others. For example, I would not recommend using acrylic yarn for this project. You can, but it is going to turn out much better when you use cotton yarn.

What Is the Best Yarn to Use?

The best yarn to use when making a crocheted bucket hat is to use cotton yarn. Most types of yarn are going to be acrylic yarn. But the best option for these crocheted bucket hats is to use 100% cotton the yarn weight is not super important, because most types of 100% cotton yarn are available only in worsted weight yarn.

Lion Brand has a great option for 100% cotton yarn in their 24/7 cotton yarn line. Hobby Lobby also has a great cotton yarn option as well. This is very similar to the Lion Band 24/7 line, but it is at Hobby Lobby also 100% cotton.

There are several different ways you can make this simple pattern for a crocheted bucket hat. How you choose to make it will depend on your personal style. You can use a different color each round or follow some steps like I have done in the pictures below. It’s entirely up to your personal preference, or the style of the person you’re making it for, as to what color pattern you do with yarn.

There are many different colors of 100% cotton yarn to choose from. You can use a color pattern, or vera-gated yarn, or make the entire bucket hat a solid color. It’s entirely up to your preference, after all, you are the one creating this hat!

Customizable Size

One of the great things about making this pattern for a crocheted bucket hat is that it can be easily adjusted to fit the specific head sizes of the person you’re making it for.

You will want to be sure to measure the circumference of the person’s head, then make sure that the hat itself measures that circumference before the finished hat is complete.

Crochet Hook Size

The best way to determine which hook size you should use for this crocheted bucket hat pattern is to reference your skin of yarn packaging. On that package, it will give you a suggested hook size to use for that specific yarn.

For example, to make this crocheted bucket hat pattern, I used Hobby Lobby’s 100% cotton yarn. That skein is a size 4, or medium worsted weight yarn. It suggests that I use a size I, or 5.5 mm crochet hook.

Keep in mind that this is just a rule of thumb, you might stitch tighter, or more loosely, than the average person. Because of this, you may choose to use a smaller hook, or larger depending on your stitch size.

If you choose to use another type of yarn, such as bulky yarn, then you will want to use a large hook for sure! But if you choose to use another type of acrylic yarn, then you might need a smaller hook depending on the specific type of yarn and how thin or thick it is.

The best way to start is to use the recommended hook size on your skin of yarn packaging. Then you can adjust it from there, depending on how tight or lose your crochet stitches are.

Basic Crochet Stitches Used in this Pattern

There are only a few basic stitches used in this crochet bucket hat pattern. This is why it is ideal if you are new to crocheting. Most of these stitches are a version of single crochet stitches. Please know that you can use double crochet stitches if you prefer, but I like to use single crochet stitches because it makes a much neater and tighter hat.

Special Stitches

Magic Ring. This is the foundation ring made for this hat. For a detailed tutorial, please check out How to Crochet a Magic Ring. Watch our YouTube short video for a quick demonstration of how to make this ring.

Chain. There are a few chains used in this crochet hat pattern. To make a chain, you will simply yarn over by wrapping the yarn from the back of the hook, around to the front. Then pull the new loop through the old loop to make a chain.

Single Crochet. A single crochet has the main stitch that you will use in this hat pattern. To make a single crochet, you insert the hook into the stitch indicated. Yarn over and pull up a new loop. There are now two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through the two loops on the hook. This makes a single crochet stitch.

Single Crochet Increase. To make a single crochet increase, you will simply make two single crochet stitches in one stitch from the previous round. This increases your overall number of stitches in the round.

Slip Stitch. To make a slip stitch, you insert the hook into the stitch indicated. Yarn over and pull through a loop. Pull that loop through the loop previously on your hook. That makes a slip stitch.

If you are brand new to crochet, you might want to check out our quick tutorial for Learning How To Crochet, to get a demonstration on how to make each of these stitches before you begin.

Does this pattern work in continuous rounds?

This pattern does not work in continuous rounds. If you want, you definitely can adapt to this pattern so that it is worked in continuous rounds. However, my personal preference is to keep the pattern nice and clean and work in individual rounds.

Now that you know all the notes in tips and tricks about this crochet bucket hat pattern, let’s look at the bucket hat step-by-step instructions for this free pattern. It’s such a fun yet basic bucket hat that you can easily crochet! Let’s get started!

Tips for Crocheting a Bucket Hat

Work in Rounds

I have suggested working this hat in spiral rounds separated by joining your stitches with a slip stitch. However, this is not required. If you prefer, you can work this hat in a continuous round.

This means that you would work the hat pattern as instructed above, but use a stitch marker to tell where one round starts and ends. Also, to work in continuous rounds you will want to skip joining the round with a slip stitch. Otherwise, the pattern above may still be followed.

Type of Yarn Changes Size

Remember the type of yarn you use will determine what crochet hook size you use, and ultimately the size of your hat. If you are using a different type of yarn, you will need to adjust accordingly so that the hat still fits you when it is completed.

Creating a Stiff Brim if your Hat Brim is too Floppy

When you are crocheting the brim, an easy way to make it a little stiffer is to use a smaller crochet hook when you reach the brim part. You don’t want to use one that is a lot smaller, or else it will be noticeable in your stitches. Rather, use one that is just a little smaller to help stiffen up the brim of your bucket hat.

Tips for Color Change

When making this crocheted bucket hat pattern, I changed color, and to add to stripes on the side of the body of the hat. You can change color whenever you prefer, this is simply my preference.

FAQs

How long does it take to crochet a bucket hat?

It doesn’t take very long to crochet a bucket hat. However, because you are working with a smaller project, and generally tighter stitches, it is a good idea to take some breaks so that you don’t hurt your hands. For me, this is a project that can be finished in a day if I am working on it continually.

Is it easy to crochet a bucket hat?

Yes, making this basic bucket hat pattern is an easy crochet bucket hat pattern to follow. You simply need to know how to make a few basic stitches.

What kind of yarn should I use to crochet a bucket hat?

The best type of yarn to use is 100% cotton yarn. I used Hobby Lobby’s 100% cotton yarn, but Lion brand also has a 24/7 cotton yarn that works great.

Do I need any special crochet stitches for this project?

The main stitches used in making this crochet bucket hat are a magic ring, chain stitches, single crochet, and single crochet increase stitches. Once you know the basics of each one of these stitches, you can easily make this crochet bucket hat pattern!

Can a beginner crochet a bucket hat?

Sure! As long as you know the basics of crocheting, you can make anything. This easy crochet bucket hat pattern is a great place to start.

Tips for Beginners

The Magic Ring: I have suggested using a magic ring or magic circle to get the project started. If this is too difficult to figure out, you can use the chain two method. To do this, you will chain two stitches, then skip the one closest to your hook and work your stitches in the next chain stitch.

Work in Sections: Keep in mind this crochet bucket hat is made in three different sections. The first is for the crown of your head or the top part. This needs to be wide enough to fit your head. The second section is the middle section or the body of your crochet bucket hat. Essentially this is a straight section, where you aren’t adding any more stitches. The third section is the brim of the hat. This is going to go out just a little bit by adding a few stitches by way of a single crochet increase stitch.
