How and what embelishments you choose to add are completely up to your preferences.
Making the Right Size Hat
Children have different sized heads depending how old and your child’s developmental level. You can make the hat in many different sizes so that it fits your child perfectly. The size of the hat will be based on the circumference head measurement of the child you want to make the hat for. Keep in mind, you may want to make it a little large, so that they have room for growth.
If you do not have the exact head measurement of the child you’d like to make the hat for, you can use this chart below for the average child’s hat size.

Basic Crochet Stitches
This children’s hat pattern uses a variety of basic crochet stitches. These are a combination of some of my favorite stitches to give it a beautiful design.
The great thing about the simple stitches used in this pattern is that they are nothing complicated. You will need to know a variety of different stitches but they are not complicated to make. Once you know the crochet basics you simply put them together to make these fun stitch patterns.

Tips and Tricks
Choosing the correct hook size
Depending on what yarn and yarn weight you end up using, you may need to change the crochet hook size that you use to make this hat. For example, if you use a #4 medium weight yarn you might be better off using a 5.0 mm crochet hook. Or if you are making a smaller hat, say for a baby, you could use a single skein of #3 light weight yarn, and might need an E or F crochet hook. Feel free to increase the hook size as you prefer based on your stitching technique and gauge.
Working with light weight yarn
I used a #3 light weight yarn for this hat. In order to have it turn out nice and warm still, I worked with two skeins of yarn at the same time. This way, the hat still turned out nice and thick. Feel free to adjust as you prefer.
Optional Embellishments
There are many things you can do to this children’s crochet hat to finish it off. Some of my favorites are to add a Pom Pom or buttons. You can make your own yarn Pom Pom, or use a flux fur Pom Pom, which are especially fun for finishing off a hat for a little girl.
Making Adult Sizes
This free crochet hat pattern can be easily adjusted in size simply by making the foundation chain wider, then making the starting band larger around so that it fits an adults head circumfrance. The adult version will also likely need a few rows higher to fit a taller head. This can be easily fixed by adding more moss stitch rounds before finishing it out.
