Single and half double crochet blanket pattern Tips and Tricks
The Turning Chian
In this pattern I recommend making two chain stitches for your turning chain. Some people prefer to make three, but it is my preference to make two. Please feel free to do however many work best for you.
Do I have to make the blanket with an edge?
No, you do not. If you want, you can remove the edging and just make the entire blanket the stitch pattern. The edging is nice, because it gives the blanket a lovely finished appearance without any additional work from you, but you can skip it if you prefer.
The crochet hook size
I have given my recommended crochet hook size to use for this blanket pattern with this particular yarn. However, if you prefer, you can increase the hook size for a larger hook giving you bigger loops if you prefer, or a smaller hook for tighter stitches.
However, if you are using a different yarn, you will definitely want to check and see what crochet hook size is recommended. Often the skein label will give you the recommended mm hook size for that particular yarn. This is a good place to start, then you can increase it or decrease it as needed.
Please note, if you are using a different crochet hook size, you may also need to reconsider how much yarn you will need to make your particular size blanket.
Using a solid color yarn
If you want, a great option is to use a single color of yarn to make this crochet blanket. I chose to use yarn with variegated colors, but really the color of the blanket is entirely your choice.

Changing your desired length
If you want, you can absolutely change the finished size of your crochet blanket to make any size you prefer. A baby blanket, which is a very common size to make, is going to be much smaller, and will require fewer skeins of yarn to make. To change the finished size of your crochet blanket, you will simply make as many chain stitches as needed to reach your desired size. Make sure that you have an even number of stitches, plus one chain stitch for turning.
Determining how much yarn to use
Determining how much yarn to use is the difficult part, for me at least. First, you will want to decide what size you want your crochet blanket to be. Do you want it to be a throw blanket size, a lapghan size (which is basically a lap blanket), a crib size, baby blanket size, or larger to cover your bed.
Once you decide this, you will need to take the measurement of the blanket you want to make, for example in this pattern I tell you how to make a 50in by 60in throw blanket. Then read your yarn label, on it, the manufacturer will tell you how many yards the skein is, and how many stitches in the gauge. For example this yarn I am using is 220 yards, with a gauge of 4″ x 4″ 7sc x 8r with 8 mm/US L-11 Crochet Hook.
There is a formula you can use to determine how much you need. For this specific blanket it would be (50×60[the size]x7[sc]) x8[r]÷220[yards] equals 763.64 divide by 220 yards equals approximately 3.47 skeins of this particular yarn needed to make a 50×60 inch blanket.
Formula: (50×60×7)×8÷220=763.636363636364/220 yards = 3.47 skeins
BUT the total amount of yarn you need may change depending on the type of stitch you are using for the blanket. I ended up using more than four skeins for this blanket.
Making color changes
If you want, you can also make color changes. You can do this by cutting the yarn, tying it and weaving in the ends of the yarn. This is the method you’ll want to follow when you reach the end of each skein. However, if you change rows more often, you can just carry the yarn up a row or two by stitching around the unused color. Essentially hiding it inside without having to worry about hiding loose ends of yarn.
