Step 2: sew the main hat pieces

Now that your fabric is cut out, you can remove the pins, and set the paper pattern aside.

Next, take the hat pieces, and lay them so that the right sides are facing together.

Use your sewing machine on a tight zig zag stitch to sew the wrong sides together. Sew all the way around the edge, but leave a gap without stitches at the very top of the hat.

Step 3: turn the hat piece right side out

Through the gap left at the top of the hat, turn the hat pieces right side out. Use your iron on a low heat setting appropriate for knit fabric to press the hat after it has been turned.

Tuck the bottom of the hat, up inside the hat, so that the bottom edge of the hat forms a smooth brim. Iron in place once again if desired.

Step 4: sew the final seam

Thread your needle and tuck the remaining raw edges of the hat that were left at the point under. Then sew together by hand, or using your machine on a straight stitch if preferred.

Tips and Tricks

Using a Zigzag Stitch

When you are making these top knot baby hats, I highly recommend using a narrow zigzag stitch. Using the zigzag stitch allows your stretchy fabric to have a little give to it, without ripping out the stitches.

Use Iron to Press

After turning the hat pieces right side out, I like to use my iron on a low heat setting to press the fabric open. That way it has a much nicer finished look to it. You can also press the hat after you tuck the inner portion up into the hat.

Why Use Jersey Knit Fabric

It is going to work best to make these hats when using jersey knit fabric. This way the hats are created from a nice breathable fabric, but also are nice and stretchy. You can find this type of knit fabric at your local craft store in a variety of colors and designs. I got this fabric from Hobby Lobby, and I loved it because it was nice and soft. Making it a good item for a baby to wear next to their skin. You can also find some nice options at JoAnns or Michaels, depending on your preference.
