Christmas Crochet Snowflakes
These white crochet snowflakes are so much fun to make, and you can use them in a variety of ways. This classic snowflake design is lovely and timeless. You can make the little snowflake small and intricate by using crochet thread, or you can make them larger by using thin yarn.
I love to use crochet thread, so that they turn out as lacey snowflakes, but it is entirely up to your preference, and what you intend to do with these beautiful snowflakes. This is a small crochet project that you can use scrap yarn to make quite easily too, which is great!

Finishing the Crochet Snowflake
To finish out the crochet snowflake, make sure to weave in any loose ends of yarn. Then trim them so that they are not visible.
Your first snowflake is now completed and ready to enjoy!
Optional Hanging Loop
If desired, you may add a chain loop to the tip of your crochet snowflake so that it can hang up. To do this, simply add your yarn to the point of your snowflake and create a chain twice the length you want it to be. Bring the chain back down to the body of your snowflake and join it together with a slip stitch. Be sure to weave in any loose ends.
How To Make Crochet Snowflakes Stiff
To make your crochet snowflakes stiff, the best way is to use fabric starch. You can find this in the laundry detergent section of most grocery stores.
Be sure to follow the instructions on the starch bottle. In most cases, you can pour the starch full strength into a bowl, and then soak your snowflake until it is damp.
Remove it from the bowl, and squeeze off any excess starch. Lay it flat on a clean kitchen towel until it is dry. Please note that these instructions may vary depending on what starch you use. To be safe, always reference your starch instructions.
Crochet Snowflake Tips and Tricks
Yarn
How your snowflakes turn out is primarily determined by the type of yarn that you use to create them. It is my preference to use thinner yarn, or crochet thread used to make doilies. This way the snowflakes turn out extra dainty and make lacy snowflakes.
However, you can also use thicker yarn, such as cotton yarn. This is a great option especially if your snowflakes will ever be exposed to heat or water. Some great cotton yarn options include 24/7 Cotton and Lily Sugar’n Cream yarn.
Another fun option is to use baby yarn. This is a nice thin type of yarn that will still let your details show through, but still make a larger snowflake.
Keep in mind, that the different yarn weights that you use will change the finished size of your snowflake and, you may want to increase or decrease the size of the crochet hook you use.
The Crochet Hook Size
When using size 10 crochet thread, I like to use a size E crochet hook. This way the snowflake turns out nice and lacey. However, you may need to adjust the crochet hook size, especially if you tend to crochet loose, or tighter, or if you use a different size yarn. Keep in mind, this is your crochet project, so feel free to take creative license and adjust the hook size as you see fit.
What Can You Make With Crochet Snowflakes
There are so many different things you can make using this crochet snowflake pattern. The beautiful snowflake motifs can be used for so many different Christmas themed projects, or winter projects. Let’s take a look at a few different ways you might enjoy using these snowflakes.
Crochet Ornaments
One of the basic and fun ways you can enjoy these crochet snowflakes is to use them as Christmas tree ornaments this holiday season. To do this, simply add an ornament hanger to the point of your snowflake and hang them from your tree.
Snowflake Garland Pattern
Another great way these snowflakes can be used is to turn them into a snowflake garland. To do this, all you have to do is add a chain connecting the snowflakes. Then you can hang it up during the Christmas season, or leave it up as a beautiful addition to your home for the winter season.
As Gift Decorations
Using these crochet snowflakes as gift decorations is another great idea. Adding them to gifts allows you to give these beautiful holiday decorations away, but still accent your package wrapping.
Turn them into a Table Runner
Not only can these beautiful snowflakes be used as decorations around your home, but you can also turn this free crochet pattern to the prettiest table runner simply by making a lot of snowflakes from this pattern, and then sewing them together at the points. One of my favorite ways is to make three long rows of the snowflakes, and then attach the rows together to make the most beautiful winter table runner out of these crochet snowflakes.
