Make Pine Cone Bird Feeders with the Kids This Spring
Supplies:
Pine cones – as many as you want to use
Bird seed – I like to use a blend for wild birdseed that has pieces small enough to stick to the pinecone
Creamy peanut butter
A piece of twine or yarn
A paper plate – to put the birdseed on
A butter knife – for spreading the peanut butter

How to Make Pinecone Bird Feeders
Pinecone Bird Feeder: Step-by-step tutorial
Step 1: first off you will want to prepare all of your supplies. Start off by cutting a length of string, twine, or yarn approximately 1 foot long, or longer if needed. Make sure that it’s long enough to reach all the way around your desired tree branch. Tie the yarn or twine securely around the top of the pinecone. Leave the extra twine or yarn intact so that you can attach it to the tree.
Step 2: next, take the paper plate and pour birdseed on it so that there is a thin layer of seeds covering the paper plate.

Step 3: use butter knife, and spread peanut butter over the pinecone. It is best to work with the pinecone so if the pieces stick up when you are looking at the pinecone, turn it upside down, and move the butter knife from the top to bottom. This way you don’t have to fight to get the peanut butter to stick.
Step 4: now with the pinecone covered in peanut butter, hold it by the top of your pinecone and the bottom, to roll it over the paper plate with birdseed. Roll it until the entire pinecone is covered with the bird seed mixture.

Step 5: after your pinecones are covered with peanut butter and birdseed, they are ready to be hung outside. Use the remaining length of string to hang them from your desired tree branch. Make sure they are secured firmly and then you are ready to leave them and enjoy watching the birds eat the seed.
Pinecone Bird Feeder Tips and Tricks
Choosing the right type of seed.
Making sure you use the right type of seed is very important. The kind of birds that are outside eat a different type of birdseed then indoor birds. Make sure you select a birdseed that is for wild birds rather than indoor pets.
What if you have a peanut allergy?
If you or one of the children making the craft has peanut allergies, you can substitute the creamy peanut butter for another type of nut butter or even vegetable shortening if desired.
Are there specific type of pinecones you have to use?
It is best if you can use large pinecones for this craft project. However, there is not a specific type that has to be used. Some pinecones are more woody and others are soft. Just remember to spread the peanut butter with the pinecone rather than working against it. If you have the more woody type of pinecone, you may need to press some of the peanut butter down inside the pine cone to help seeds stick butter.
