Step 3: Cut out the fabric pieces

Now, using your cut out pattern, lay it on the fabric you are using. Pin the pattern in place, then cut out the fabric pieces with scissors.

Step 4: Line up the fabric and pin

Once your fabric pieces are cut out, remove the pins and pattern pieces.

Taking the lining piece, and the outer pieces, lay them on top of eachother, so that the right sides are together. Sew across the top.

Press the seam open with the iron.

Repeat this step four times, with each of the fabric pieces you have cut out. You will not have a front and back of each hand that are sewn together with the outside fabric and the fabric lining.

Step 5: Sew and add elastic

Take two of the mitten pieces that are sewn together. Lay them on top of each other so that the right sides are together again, and the same fabric pieces are also together.

Start sewing on the side of the fabric lining side, and sew all of the way around, except for a small opening when you get back, near to the starting point.

**** Add the elastic

Iron the baby mittens in place, so that the seams lay flat.

Step 7: Finishing stitches

Use a needle and thread to hand sew the small opening closed. Tie a knot and finish out. Now your no scratch baby mittens are finished and ready to be used!

Baby Mitten Tips and Tricks

Fabric Recommendations

My personal favorite fabric types to use when making these baby mittens are jersey knit, or flannel. Knit fabric is great for the hotter months because the fabric is nice and breathable. But the flannel fabric is ideal for colder months, because then it not only protects your baby from scratching themselves, but also keeps their little hands warm. Let’s be honest though, knit fabric is a lot easier to work with, especially for the smaller sizes.

You can also use muslin fabric, or fleece fabric if you want. Muslin fabric is a bit on the thinner side, and can sometimes be a challenge to work with when making such a small project.

On the other hand, fleece fabric, is nice and warm. However, because fleece fabric is much more bulky, you may want to consider making a size larger than desired, so that they don’t turn out too small.

Use Different Stitch Types

If you are able, when using knit fabric, you are going to be best off using the zigzag stitch on your sewing machine. This way the mittens will have a little give to them, without pulling the stitches apart.
