Before You Begin

Before you get started, you will want to first iron the fabric, so that it lays nice and smooth. I also like to wash my fabric so that it does all of the shrinking it’s going to before I make my project, but that is up to your preference.

After your fabric is ironed, take the piece you want to use for your center and cut it so that it is cut to ¼ yard or 9 inches. Also, cut the backing fabric to ½ yard or 18 inches.

Now that your fabric is cut, it is time to get started sewing your table runner!

Putting it all Together

Step 1: Start by Sewing the First Side

Lay out your fabric, so that the backing fabric is laying smoothly on a flat surface, with its right side up. Next, take the center fabric and lay it right side down, on top of the backing piece. Line up the first long side and pin it in place. Sew along the long edge of that first side that is lined up.

Step 2: Line up Edges and Sew the Second Side

Next, take your fabric, and lay it back on your smooth surface, so that the backing is on the bottom side.

Move the other edge so that it is lined up, along the long edge. Pin that in place and sew the remaining long edge.

You now have a long tube shape, with both of the long sides sewn together.

Step 3: Turn Right Side Out and Iron

Next, we want to iron, turn the right side out, and iron again.

First, let’s iron the seam of the raw edges so that it sets open.

Turn the fabric right side out, and iron so that the center, sits in the center, with the backing creating a border around it. It’s a good idea to use your ruler to make sure both sides are even all of the way down.

Trim off your salvage edge. Iron one more time so that everything lays nice and flat.

Step 4: Sew the Ends

We are going to sew the short side. To do this, you will fold the table runner in half the long way. Pin the first end together after it has been folded. Repeat this process with the remaining short side.

Sew across both of these ends. Carefully trim the corners with your scissors, being careful to trim only outside of the stitches.

Step 5: Iron the Seams

Now we are going to press seam with the iron. Open the seam, so that it creates an inside-out triangle at the ends of your table runner. Press the raw edges of the seam open with your iron.

Step 6: Turn Right Side Out and Iron

Turn the points of the table runner right side out, so that the backing is showing, and the seam is hidden. If necessary, use a stick to make sure your tip is nice and pointed.

Press one more time with your iron so that it lays nice and flat.

Step 7: Finishing Top Stitches

To finish out your table runner, you will want to sew a top stitch, around the two short ends, and on top of the long sides. Sew a top stitch around the entire center piece of fabric, but make sure you are sewing on the backing material. This will secure your table runner in place so that it nicely holds its shape.

Tips for Finishing a Table Runner

Iron, Iron, Iron

As you may have noticed, there are a lot of places where I recommend you stop and press the table runner with your fabric. This is because the ironing helps you proceed with the sewing project more easily, and gives it a nice professional appearance when you are finished. Even though ironing may not be your favorite thing, it will pay off with this project.

Add Embellishments

Before you do the final top stitch, you can tuck some embellishments under each end if you wish. Or you can even add them after the fact to help add your unique flair to your table runners. Get creative and have fun!
