How to Make a Crochet Cross
R1: ch 10 sts
R2: in the 4th ch st from your hook, make a dc, ch 2, in the same st as before make 2 more dc sts. Ch 1, skip to the last ch sp, in the last ch, work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc.
R3: turn, sl st into the first ch 2 sp, ch 3 (counts as the first dc st) dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the same space, ch 1, skip to the next ch 2 sp, make 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc.
*repeat row 3 for a total of 24 rows, or until the cross is as tall as you wish it to be.

R4: to finish off the center portion of the cross, sl st in the first ch 2 space, ch 5 sts, and then sl st in the next ch 2 space. Finish off and weave in the ends.

Adding the Sides
R1: counting down from the top, join your crochet thread on the side of the 7th row from the top. Join with a sl st, then ch 3 sts (counts as the first dc), make a dc in the same st, ch 2, make 2 more dc sts in the same st. Ch 1, in the side of the next row, make 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc sts.

R2: turn, sl st into the first ch 2 sp, ch 3 (counts as the first dc st) dc in the same sp, ch 2, 2 dfc in the same sp, ch 1, in the next ch 2 space make, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc.
*Repeat row 2 until you have 7 rows completed.

R3: finishing the side, after you have 7 rows created, sl st into the first ch 2 sp, ch 5 sts, sl st into the last ch 2 sp, finish off and weave in the ends.

Repeat these same steps to add the other side of the cross. Finish off and weave in any ends you might have hanging out still.

Adding Embellishments
When your cross is finished, you can add ribbons down the center if you would like. Adding the ribbon makes it stand out and look extra fancy. I used a basic narrow silky ribbon that is 1/4 inch wide.
To add the ribbon, take the end and weave it in and out, through the center of the cross. Pull the ribbon so that you have extra hanging from the top and bottom of the cross if desired. Then cut it. You can also add it to the sides of the cross if you would like.

Tips and Tricks
Selecting the right Hook Size
Choosing the right size crochet hook is really important. The hook size will determine the finished size of your cross, how lacy your cross is, and how prominent your stitch pattern is in your cross. In the pattern above I have given my recommendation for the hook size to use with crochet thread, but you can also increase or decrease the size of crochet hook you use depending on your stitch tension.
Using Cotton Crochet Thread
I highly recommend that you use crochet thread for this cross pattern. That way you will have the best finished results as opposed to using yarn.
When selecting your crochet thread, there are different options as far as the thread thickness and thread color. Keep in mind the thicker the thread the larger your cross will be, or the thinner the more dainty, as long as you use a smaller hook.
