Simple Baby Rag Quilt Sewing Pattern

If this is your first rag quilt, this pattern is a great place to start. It is made simply by sewing stripes in two layers of flannel fabric together and leaving the seams exposed on one side, and fraying them with scissors to give you that rag quilt look. Don’t worry though, we will go over the detailed instructions below.

These strip rag quilts are a great baby gift idea, as they make a great crib sized blanket that is lightweight and perfect for snuggling. You can also make this blanket in other sizes as well, to fit your desired space.

How To Make An Easy Rag Quilt Baby Blanket

Step 1: Iron and Cut

Before you begin, it’s a really good idea to iron your fabric so that it lays nice and smooth for you to cut. Then use your ruler, cutting mat, and rotary cutter to cut strips. We made our strips 6 inches wide.

Step 2: Arrange In A Color Pattern

After all of your strips are cut, arrange your strips into the color order you want to use in the quilt.

Step 3: Use Adhesive Spray

Next, take the first two strips of the same print fabric, and lay it with the wrong side up. Spray the wrong side with spray adhesive, then lay the other strip with the right side facing up, on top of the sprayed fabric strip.

Use your hands to smooth it in place, making sure the strips line up with each other as closely as possible.

You should now have two pieces of fabric glued together, with the right sides facing out, and the wrong sides stuck together.

At this point you can iron it firmly in place, so that the strips are glued nice and smooth.

Repeat this step with each of your strips of fabric.

Step 4: Sew The Strips Together

Now it’s time to assemble your rag quilt. To do this, you will place one prepared fabric piece on top of the next, making sure to keep your pattern order. Sew the seams using a straight stitch, so that all of the raw edges are exposed, on the same side of your quilt.

Step 5: Trim The Edges

Once all of your strips are sewn together, with the raw edges all exposed on one side of your quilt, it’s time to trim the edges. Take the quilt and lay it out nice and flat on your cutting mat. Use the ruler to cut a straight edge on the outer edges of your blanket. Repeat this with both sides of your quilt.

Step 6: Sew The Edge

When all of the pieces of fabric are sewn together, use the straight stitch to sew straight lines around the entire perimeter of the quilt using a ⅝ inch seam.

Step 7: Cut The Fray

To get the rag effect to the quilt, you are going to take a pair of scissors and carefully cut the raw edges around the edge of your quilt, and the exposed seams of your quilt to make it look frayed. As you cut, make sure that you do not cut past the seams you sewed, and try to keep the cuts evenly spaced as you go. You will not need to do this process on the back side of the quilt because it does not have any exposed edges.

When you have gone all the way around the edge and across each and every seam, your project is completed! Enjoy!
