The sizing of your twisted headband can be determined by the person’s head circumference measurement, minus an inch or two. However, if you are not able to measure the person’s head, here are a few sizing estimates for you to use as reference.
Age Size of Fabric
Adult 9 inches wide by 19-22 inches long (Note: I like to make them 22 inches long so that they fit nicely, without being too tight. Keep in mind you can always make them smaller, but you can’t add fabric very easily!)

Toddler 7 inches wide by 16 inches long
Baby 6-12 months 6 inches wide by 15 inches long
Baby 0-6 months 6 inches wide by 14 inches long
How to Make an Easy Sew Twist Headband
Seam Allowance: ⅜ inch
Step 1: Cutting
Cut the fabric for an adult size that is 9 inches wide, by 19-22 inches long depending on your preference.
When you are cutting out the pieces of fabric, make sure that the stretch goes the long way, if you are using a two way stretch fabric. With four way stretch fabric, you don’t need to worry about this, just simply cut out the pattern pieces according to your desired dimensions based on the size of the person you are making the headband for.
Step 2: Fold the Fabric
Now, take the cut out piece of fabric, and fold it in half along the long edge. So that the right sides are together. You are folding it in half much like a hot dog bun.
Use straight pins, pin along the raw edges of fabric, so that they stay evenly matched as you prepare to sew.
Step 3: Sewing
Now head to your sewing machine, and use a tight zigzag stitch to sew a straight line along the long sides of your fabric.
Use your iron on a light heat setting to press the seam on the long edge open. Then turn the sewn fabric right side out. If needed, you can use a safety pin on one end to help you turn the headband right side out.
Step 4: Folding and Assembly
Now comes the fun part, folding the headband so that it has the twisted appearance. Before you start, make sure that your long seam is on the side, tucked in the fold, so that it won’t show.
To do this, start by folding the headband in half, so that the two short ends with raw edges meet.
Now stager these two short ends, so that one lays flat, and the other one has the bottom edge resting in the center of the end beneath it.
Take the bottom layer and fold the bottom end, up over the top layer, forming a “u” shape.
Pick up the two ends, and now fold the top layer around the back side of the bottom layer, so that it also forms an upside down “u” shape.
You should now have both pieces of fabric forming “u”s around one another.
If desired, pin or clip these pieces in place. Before taking them to the sewing machine.
On the sewing machine, sew the raw edges also using a tight zigzag stitch. Then if your seam is wide, use a pair of pinking scissors to trim away excess fabric, being careful to not cut the seam.
Turn the fabric right side out, so that the seam just created is facing inside. Now your headband is ready to give away or enjoy!
How to Make a Simple Twist Headband
Seam Allowance: ⅜ inch
Step 1: How to cut your Fabric
Cut your fabric to your desired size using the size chart above, or head circumference measurement. Please note if you are using the head circumference measurement, you will want to subtract 1-2 inches, so that the headband sits nice and snug.
Before you cut your fabric, if you are using a two way stretch, make sure that it stretches the long way. You do not need to worry about this for a four way stretch. Cut the fabric to your desired size.
Step 2: Fold and Pin
Fold the cut fabric in half, so that the right sides are together, and raw edges match. Pin the raw edges in place if desired.
Step 3: Sew Long Seam
Using a tight zigzag stitch, sew a straight line along the raw edge, leaving an opening approximately 1 ½ inch long to later turn it right side out.
Step 4: Twist
Lay the long piece of fabric out on a flat surface. Then hold one end flat, take the other end, and give it one twist.
Still laying on your flat surface, take one end of your headband to meet the other short end.
Step 5: Finish Sewing
Using the short zigzag stitch, sew the two ends together.
Step 6: Turn Right Side Out and Finish
Through the small opening that you left, turn the headband right side out. Then use a needle and thread to hand stitch the opening closed. Finish out your stitching, and turn the headband so that the long seam is nestled in the fold of the headband.
Your twisted headband is now ready to use or give away. Enjoy!

What Kind of Fabric to Use: Fabric Suggestions
Selecting the right kind of fabric is crucial in getting your twisted headband to turn out correctly. You will definitely want to make sure you use a stretchy knit fabric for these headbands. There are a few different options, but I highly recommend using jersey knit fabric that has a four way stretch to it.
Use A Zigzag Stitch
In order for your headbands to hold their stitching long term, it is a really good idea to use a tight zigzag stitch, rather than a normal straight stitch. This is because the zigzag stitch allows your headbands to stretch out as needed, making this an ideal stretch stitch.
How to choose your headband size
There are a few different ways you can determine the size of headband you need to make. One way is to measure the head circumference of the person you are making the headband for. Then subtract 1-2 inches from the measurement before cutting out the fabric.
Another easy way is to use the size chart above. This will help give you an idea of what size your fabric should be based on the age of the person you are making it for.
