Basic Stitches
Most of these patterns will use basic crochet stitches to make the patterns. Keep in mind that others might be a little more complicated but will typically use the base stitches of a chain, single crochet, or double crochet. Let’s look at some of the more common stitches used to make these different crocheted square patterns.
A Magic Ring. Because most crochet squares start off by crocheting a circle in the center of the project, it’s important to know how to make a magic ring. Like other projects, making a crocheted magic ring where a magic circle is the foundation ring for the project can be valuable. For a complete tutorial on how to make a magic ring, check out THIS article.
Chain Stitches. Making chain stitches is a simple, beginner-level crochet stitch. To make a chain, you’ll first want to make the magic ring, then make a chain, by holding the loop already on your hook with your finger. Then wrap the yarn over, by wrapping it from the back of the hook around the top towards you. This is called a yarn over. Pull the new loop of yarn that you just wrapped over the hook through the loop that was previously on the hook. This makes a chain stitch.
Single Crochet. To make a single crochet stitch, first, insert the hook into the stitch indicated, yarn over, and pull up the loop. There are now two loops on the hook. Yarn over once more and pull through the two loops on your hook. This makes a single crochet stitch.
Double Crochet Stitches. To make a double crochet stitch, you first yarn over, then insert the hook into the stitch indicated. Yarn over and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on the hook, then yarn over again and pull through the remaining two loops on your hook. This makes a double crochet stitch.
Double Crochet Clusters. Double crochet clusters can be made in a couple different ways. Let’s look at one of the more common ways to make a double crochet cluster. First yarn over in insert your hook into the first stitch indicated. Yarn over and pull up the loop. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook.
Then yarn over and insert your hook into the next ditch indicated. Yarn over and pull up the loop. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on the hook once more. Yarn over again and pull through the remaining loops on your hook. This makes a double crochet cluster stitch.
Treble Crochet Stitch. To make a treble crochet stitch, and your first yarn over two times, then insert your hook into the stitch indicated. Yarn over and pull up a loop. There are now four loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on the hook, yarn over again and pull through the next two loops on your hook, and yarn over again and pull through the remaining two loops on your hook.
A Slip Stitch. To make a slip stitch, you will first insert your hook into the stitch indicated, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Then pull that same loop through the previous loop on your hook. This makes a slip stitch.
To make a basic granny square pattern, you will usually use a chain stitch and double crochet stitch. It’s also a good idea to use the magic ring to start your project. Typically, when making a granny square, you combine double crochet stitches and chain stitches together to make what is known as a granny stitch.
Please note that the skill level of these patterns may vary, depending on which specific pattern you select. There are several good beginner-level patterns included here, but there will also be a few more complicated patterns included as well.
Type of Yarn
When selecting the type of yarn to use for your crocheted square patterns, it’s important that you select the correct yarn weight and colors. Ideally, for most square patterns you want to use worsted weight yarn. But make sure to double-check with that specific pattern suggests.
You can also enjoy making your crochet project any kind of color combinations that you prefer. Some enjoy making bright colors for their squares, and others prefer to use a solid color for their entire project.
Depending on the finished size of your crocheted project, you might even be able to use some leftover yarn scraps, in different colors. It’s entirely up to you when to implement color changes on your square crochet project, or if you want to use a single color for the entire project. Feel free to get creative and make it how you want!
